For decades, fossil fuel interests and political cowards have manufactured doubt around a truth as old as industrialisation itself: humans are burning the planet, and the consequences are arriving on schedule. As extreme weather batters every continent and governments gather once again to negotiate our collective survival, the basic physics of climate change remain stubbornly, inconveniently clear. Here is the science — stripped of talking points, free from both-sidesing, and laid bare.

The Foundational Physics: A Planet Out of Balance

The Earth’s climate has always fluctuated. It always will. Volcanoes erupt. Orbital cycles shift. Solar output waxes and wanes. For roughly 10,000 years, however, the Holocene epoch delivered the stable, mild conditions that allowed human civilisation to put down roots, build cities, and develop agriculture.

That stability is now collapsing.

Since the late 19th century, the average surface temperature of the planet has climbed by roughly 1.2°C above pre-industrial baselines. That single number — 1.2°C — represents the difference between the climate in which your grandparents grew up and the climate your children will inherit. The warming is not evenly distributed. The Arctic is heating at roughly four times the global average, sea levels are rising, and ocean heat content has smashed record after record.

The driver? Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases released by burning coal, gas, and oil, by clearing forests, and by industrial agriculture. These gases trap infrared radiation that would otherwise escape into space. The physics was first described by Swedish physicist Svante Arrhenius in 1896 and has been refined by generations of scientists since. It is not a theory awaiting confirmation. It is a working understanding of how energy moves through the atmosphere.

The Evidence Is Overwhelming — And Growing

If anyone tells you the evidence is uncertain, they have not looked.

Temperature records from weather stations, satellites, ocean buoys, and ice cores all converge on the same conclusion: the planet is warming, and it is warming fastest where human activity is most concentrated. Atmospheric CO2 concentrations have risen from approximately 280 parts per million before the Industrial Revolution to more than 420 ppm today — levels not seen for at least 800,000 years, and probably several million.

The fingerprints of human causation are everywhere. Isotopic analysis of carbon in the atmosphere shows the excess CO2 carries the chemical signature of fossil fuels, not volcanic or biological sources. The stratosphere is cooling while the troposphere warms — exactly what greenhouse theory predicts. Nights are warming faster than days. Winter is warming faster than summer. The poles are warming faster than the tropics. Every signal matches the model. None match the contrarian narrative.

More than 97% of actively publishing climate scientists agree that human-caused climate change is real. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), representing the consensus of thousands of researchers from 195 countries, has issued eight assessment reports over three decades. Each one has painted a starker picture than the last.

The Costs of Delay: A Tally Already Being Paid

This is not some distant threat our grandchildren will sort out. It is happening now.

The 2020s have delivered a relentless parade of climate-driven disasters. Wildfires have blackened millions of hectares across the Mediterranean, Australia, and the western United States. Heatwaves have killed thousands across Europe, South Asia, and Africa. Hurricanes intensified by warm seas have devastated Caribbean island nations and US coastlines. Floods have submerged one-third of Pakistan, displaced millions across Nigeria, and destroyed harvests across the Horn of Africa.

The economic cost is staggering. Insurance giant Munich Re estimates that weather-related disasters caused more than $280 billion in losses globally in 2023 alone. The World Economic Forum now ranks extreme weather and biodiversity collapse among the top three risks to global economic stability.

Behind the numbers lie human faces. Farmers watching their land turn to dust. Coastal communities watching the sea claim their homes. Children gasping through wildfire smoke. The climate crisis is, at its core, a crisis of inequality — those who have done least to cause it suffer its consequences first and worst.

The Denial Machine — And Why It Still Fails

Despite the evidence, the fossil fuel industry has spent half a century funding front groups, commissioning dubious studies, and amplifying cranks to manufacture public doubt. Documents revealed through litigation show that companies including ExxonMobil privately understood the science as early as the 1970s while publicly funding disinformation campaigns.

This denial infrastructure — taxpayer-subsidised, politically protected, and embarrassingly effective — has delayed policy action for a generation. But the strategy is cracking. Extreme weather is now touching voters in every constituency. Insurance markets are withdrawing from climate-exposed regions. Young people are organising in ways that older pollsters did not predict. The politics of delay is running out of road.

The science is settled. What remains unsettled is whether our political and economic systems can muster the courage to act on what the evidence demands.

Why it Matters

Every fraction of a degree we fail to prevent is a policy choice with a body count attached. The science of climate change is not a partisan talking point or a matter of legitimate debate — it is the most rigorously tested understanding humanity has ever produced about how our planet works. Ignoring it does not make the consequences disappear; it merely ensures the bill comes due on someone else’s watch. The choice before us is no longer between action and inaction, but between a managed transition to a livable future and an unmanaged catastrophe that will reshape civilisation. That decision belongs to all of us, and the clock is ticking.
