A graduate researcher is turning the fur of a century‑old taxidermy bear into a forensic aid that could help curb the illegal poaching and trafficking of wild animals.
From Exhibit to Evidence
The specimen in question is Boris, a 120‑year‑old brown bear that has stood as an unofficial mascot at the Museum of Chelmsford in Essex since 1932. Boris arrived as part of a large collection donated by a local game hunter and has long delighted visitors. Hayden Leigh, a forensic science graduate at the University of Staffordshire, obtained permission to take small samples of Boris’s hair for a PhD project that examines how the animal’s fur can be used to improve the identification of wildlife remains seized by authorities.
Microscopic Analysis Aims to Boost Detection
Leigh’s work involves studying the cuticle patterns, layered structure and DNA of Boris’s hairs under a microscope. By mapping the natural variation across different parts of the bear’s body, he hopes to create a reference database that will make it easier to match hairs recovered from crime scenes to specific species. “There’s been hundreds of studies done on dog hairs and cat hairs and general domestic animals, and I thought, well, let’s make a wider impact than on the wider wildlife crime investigations,” he explained. The goal is to develop a cost‑effective and reliable alternative to full DNA testing, which can be expensive and time‑consuming in the field.

Museum Partnerships and Ethical Approach
Before securing the Museum of Chelmsford’s cooperation, Leigh approached roughly thirty zoos and other museums seeking material for his research. The museum agreed to lend Boris’s hair, noting that historic taxidermy offers an accessible and ethical source of authentic animal hair without the need to disturb living specimens. Councillor Jennie Lardge, cabinet member for culture and leisure at Chelmsford City Council, acknowledged that taxidermy remains a controversial element of many collections but praised the project’s outcome. “It highlights the scientific value of historic taxidermy collections in museums in 2026, and we are delighted that the Museum of Chelmsford has been able to support this important project,” she said.

If Leigh’s technique proves successful, it could give wildlife enforcement agencies a quicker, cheaper way to verify whether seized hairs belong to protected species, strengthening prosecutions against poachers and traffickers.
