The newly signed contracts with Canadian suppliers cover the majority of the biomass pellets the generating station will need. Both wood and agricultural hemp pellet sources have been secured, ensuring the plant can operate on a mixed renewable feedstock.

“These milestones give us confidence in the path forward as we continue working to maintain reliable service for customers while preparing for a future without coal,” Clark said in a statement.
The fact that the fuel will be sourced domestically is particularly significant. By relying on Canadian suppliers, the utility reduces its exposure to volatile international energy markets while supporting local forestry and agricultural sectors. A Decade-Long Search for a Credible Alternative

The station, located on the shore of Chaleur Bay, has long been one of the few remaining coal-fired operations in Canada.
