The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has announced that its iconic Hockey Night in Canada programme will return this season, featuring live coverage of the Professional Women’s Hockey League for the first time.
A Historic Shift for a Canadian Tradition
For generations, Hockey Night in Canada has been synonymous with NHL action on Saturday evenings. After the sublicensing agreement with Rogers Communications lapsed last spring, the broadcaster sought a new direction to keep the beloved programme alive.
First PWHL Fixture Set for December
The inaugural women’s game to be aired under the Hockey Night banner will be a December 5 clash between the Montreal Victoire and the expansion PWHL Hamilton side. CBC Sports executive director Chris Wilson explained the move, saying, “Hockey is more than the NHL now… we’re really optimistic that it will breathe life into the brand for the long term.”

Building on Recent Success
The Victoire arrive at the broadcast fresh from capturing the PWHL championship in May 2026, defeating the Ottawa Charge in a thrilling final. That victory, captured in a file photo by Adrian Wyld of The Canadian Press, underscores the growing talent and excitement within the women’s league.
By placing the PWHL centre stage, CBC aims to attract a broader audience while honouring the programme’s deep‑rooted place in Canadian culture.
Why it Matters
This partnership signals a meaningful expansion of mainstream media coverage for women’s sports, offering visibility that can drive investment, inspire young athletes, and challenge longstanding gender disparities in hockey. As the PWHL continues to grow, its presence on a national platform like Hockey Night in Canada could accelerate the league’s stability and help cement women’s hockey as a permanent fixture in the nation’s sporting conversation.
