The families of two teenagers who lost their lives after a car entered the River Wear have described them as a “beautiful girl” and a “loving” boy, as a community begins to mourn a double tragedy that has left a profound void.

Emergency services were called to the scene after the vehicle left the road and submerged in the water. Despite a major rescue operation involving fire crews, police divers and the ambulance service, both occupants were pronounced dead. Formal identification has not yet been completed by the coroner, but relatives have come forward to honour their memory.

‘She lit up every room she walked into’

In a statement released through Northumbria Police, the family of the young woman remembered a daughter and sister whose presence was defined by warmth and light.

“She was a beautiful girl, inside and out,” the tribute reads. “She lit up every room she walked into. Her laugh was infectious, her kindness limitless. We are utterly devastated. There are no words for a loss like this.”

Friends have since gathered near the riverbank, leaving flowers, candles and handwritten notes. A vigil is being organised for later this week, with the local secondary school opening its doors for pupils and staff to access counselling support.

‘He had a heart of gold’

The family of the young man painted a portrait of a teenager grounded in compassion.

'He had a heart of gold'

“He was a loving boy with a heart of gold,” their statement says. “He would do anything for anyone. He loved his friends, his family, his football. He had his whole life ahead of him. We are broken.”

Teammates from his local club described a committed midfielder who arrived early for training and stayed late to help pack away equipment. The club has postponed this weekend’s fixtures as a mark of respect.

Investigation underway

Northumbria Police confirmed that a collision investigation is ongoing. Officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage from the surrounding roads in the moments before the incident to come forward.

A force spokesperson said: “This is an absolutely heartbreaking incident. Our thoughts are first and foremost with the families and friends of the two young people who have lost their lives. Specialist officers are supporting them at this unimaginably difficult time.”

The road near the entry point to the river remains closed while forensic examination continues. There is no indication at this stage of any other vehicle being involved.

A community in shock

Local councillors have spoken of a “palpable sense of grief” spreading through the area. Schools have activated critical incident plans, and youth workers have been deployed to community centres to offer space for young people to talk.

A community in shock

The River Wear, a familiar backdrop for daily life, has become a focal point for collective mourning. Bouquets now line the railings where the car left the tarmac, each one a quiet testament to lives cut short.

Why it Matters

Two families have been shattered in an instant, and a community is left searching for answers it may never fully receive. Beyond the immediate grief, this tragedy underscores the fragility of young lives and the rippling impact of a single moment on a road that countless people travel every day. As the investigation proceeds, the focus must remain on supporting those left behind — and on learning whatever lessons can prevent another such loss.
