Sir Kevin Sinfield crossed the finish line at Old Trafford after completing seven ultramarathons in seven days, a feat that has pushed the total raised for motor neurone disease causes past the £13 million mark. The final leg of his annual challenge took place ahead of the Super League Grand Final, with the rugby league legend handing over the trophy before the Warrington Wolves met Wakefield Trinity. His effort was a tribute to his former teammate Rob Burrow, who died in 2024, and drew support from royalty, sporting figures and fans across the country.

The Route and the Royals

Sinfield set off from Hull on 27 September, running a series of 7 km, hour‑long blocks each day, with an extra mile opened up for members of the MND community to join. Over the week he visited every one of the 12 Super League clubs, turning the journey into a travelling celebration of the sport. Along the way he received unexpected visits from The Prince and Princess of Wales, the Princess Royal, former England football manager Sir Gareth Southgate and Leeds boxer Josh Warrington. Their appearances added a surge of public attention to the already high‑profile fundraiser.

Funds and Beneficiaries

The money generated by this year’s run will be divided among six organisations: the MND Association, Leeds Hospitals Charity, the My Name5 Doddie Foundation, the Darby Rimmer Foundation, MND Scotland and the Irish MND Association. Since the inaugural challenge in 2020, Sinfield’s endurance events have collectively contributed more than £13 million to research, patient care and support services for those living with motor neurone disease. The latest total pushes the cumulative figure well beyond the original target, underscoring the sustained generosity of the rugby league family and beyond.

Voices from the Burrow Family

Speaking to the crowd at Old Trafford, Sinfield said, “The rugby league community has got right behind the MND community and Rob would be so proud to see how you’ve supported and cared, and showed your love for a community that really needs us.”

Lindsey Burrow, widow of Rob Burrow, told BBC Radio 4’s PM, “It’s bittersweet that Rob’s not here today to see Kevin finish his final challenge but Rob will be with us in spirit and it’s just testimony to Kevin that he’s so humbled to do this not just for Rob but for the whole MND community,” Lindsey said. “It’s just incredible. I am in complete awe of the efforts of Kevin and his team over the last seven days, and not just over the last seven days but over the last seven years,” she added.

Sinfield’s own son, Jack, lined up with Wakefield Trinity in their bid to secure a first top‑flight title since 1968, linking the next generation to the family’s legacy of resilience and sport.

Why it Matters

Kevin Sinfield’s seven‑in‑seven ultramarathon is more than a personal endurance test; it has become a rallying point for a cause that urgently needs both funding and public awareness. By channelling the passion of rugby league fans, the goodwill of royalty and the reach of sporting celebrities into tangible financial support, the challenge demonstrates how sport can drive meaningful change for communities facing devastating illnesses. The continued growth of the total raised each year signals a lasting commitment that could accelerate research breakthroughs and improve care for countless people living with motor neurone disease.
