A Norfolk family has paid an emotional tribute to their “kind and loving” GP daughter, who was found dead at her home, as her husband appeared in court accused of her murder.
The body of Dr Hannah Cain, 45, who was known to patients as Dr Hannah Terry, was discovered at her residence in Dersingham on Sunday morning. Her husband, Mark Cain, also 45, appeared before Norwich magistrates without entering a plea and was remanded in custody pending further court proceedings scheduled for Thursday.
Family Statement
In a heartfelt statement released through Norfolk Police, the family described their profound grief following the loss of their loved one.
“She was kind, generous and loving; a beloved mother, daughter, sister, auntie, daughter-in-law and friend,” they said. “We are devastated by the loss of our beautiful Hannah.”
The family expressed immense pride in the woman their daughter had become and the dedicated care she provided to her patients throughout her career.
“We are incredibly proud of the woman she was and of the great care she took of all her patients who knew her as Dr Terry. We would ask people to respect our privacy at this difficult time.”
Medical Practice Closure and Royal Connections
Grimston Medical Centre, where Dr Cain was listed as part of the practice team, temporarily closed its doors for two days following the incident before reopening on Wednesday. The practice confirmed it would not be commenting on the circumstances surrounding her death.
Beyond her local medical duties, Dr Cain had also served within a specialised pool of doctors who were regularly on call for members of the Royal Family, according to reports. Her service area encompassed Dersingham, situated near the royal Sandringham estate in west Norfolk, and Grimston to the south.
Court Proceedings and Investigation Details
At Norwich Magistrates’ Court, prosecutor Jacqui Hanlon detailed the timeline of events leading to the tragic outcome. Emergency services were called to Dr Cain’s home on Fern Hill at approximately 02:25 BST on Sunday.
“The victim was found in an upstairs bedroom not breathing, not conscious,” Hanlon stated during proceedings. Following a post-mortem examination, authorities identified a blunt force injury to the right side of Dr Cain’s head, along with injuries that could indicate compression of the neck.
District Judge Matthew Bone ordered Mark Cain to remain in custody while awaiting his next court appearance at King’s Lynn Crown Court on Thursday.
Community Response
The local community has come to terms with the shocking loss of a respected healthcare professional. A significant police presence maintained order around the affected neighbourhood during the initial investigation phase, with forensic teams conducting thorough searches of the property.
Colleagues and neighbours have expressed their condolences, remembering Dr Cain’s commitment to patient care and her warm presence within the tight-knit Norfolk community.
Why it Matters
This case highlights the devastating human cost behind domestic violence statistics, which continue to affect communities across the UK at alarming rates. Healthcare professionals like Dr Cain play vital roles in safeguarding vulnerable individuals, yet tragically become victims themselves. The incident underscores ongoing concerns about support systems for those experiencing domestic abuse and raises questions about how best to protect frontline workers who dedicate their lives to caring for others. As investigations proceed, the focus remains on ensuring justice while supporting affected families through this incredibly difficult time.
