The trial at Winchester Crown Court has begun for four men accused of sexually assaulting Joanne Young, whose husband Philip Young is alleged to have drugged her for years and facilitated her abuse through online advertisements and a swinging website.

The Online Platform That Connected the Parties

Prosecutors say Philip Young, 50, advertised his wife on a classifieds site and “loaned” her to other men, inviting participants through adult listings on Craigslist and a dedicated swinging forum. Connor Sanderson‑Doyle, 32, from Swindon, told police he responded to an ad describing a woman tied and blindfolded, believing the couple were simply “trying to live out whatever their kink is”. He arrived at the Youngs’ house on a motorcycle, kept his balaclava on, and assumed the presence of toys indicated children were present.

Sanderson‑Doyle, then 21, described seeing Joanne Young “tied up and blindfolded” as shown in the online picture. He recalled hearing her utter “No”, which he interpreted as a request for a different activity rather than a refusal. Later, he said he sensed she was uncomfortable and left, insisting he thought he had her consent and that he “didn’t know she was drugged”. He labelled the encounter a “non event”.

Defendants’ Accounts of the Alleged Encounter

Norman Macksoni, 48, of Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire, denies a single count of rape alleged to have occurred in February 2017. He told officers he worked as an MC under the username “dark stranger” on the swinging site and claimed the platform was “about couples living out fantasies” with a thriving “cuckold community”. Macksoni asserted Joanne Young was “totally coherent”, that the meeting was “just a sex meet and then I left”, and that he did not use a condom because “he specifically said she didn’t like them”.

Defendants’ Accounts of the Alleged Encounter

Richard Wilkins, 62, of Toothill, Wiltshire, and Mohammed Hassan, 38, of Swindon, both deny the charges of rape and sexual touching respectively. Their pleas of not guilty were entered as the trial continues.

Philip Young’s Conviction and the Broader Implications

Philip Young has already pleaded guilty to multiple charges of drugging and sexually abusing his former wife, 49, over a prolonged period at their Swindon home. The prosecution alleges he used online ads to advertise his wife and effectively “loaned” her to other men, creating a network of abuse that spanned years.

Joanne Young, who has waived her right to anonymity, testified that she was restrained, blindfolded and drugged while being assaulted. She described the experience as a “kink” that she was forced to endure, highlighting the manipulative control exerted by her husband.

Why It Matters

This case underscores the dangers of online adult platforms being exploited to facilitate serious sexual offences, revealing how deceptive advertising and the promise of consensual kink can mask coercive control and drugging. The outcome may influence how law enforcement monitors and regulates digital spaces that claim to promote consensual adult interactions, potentially prompting stricter oversight and public awareness campaigns to protect vulnerable individuals from similar exploitation.
