A comprehensive study spanning two decades has revealed that adhering to a Mediterranean diet may lower the risk of stroke by as much as 25% in women. This dietary pattern, renowned for its emphasis on healthy fats from olive oil, along with a generous intake of vegetables, nuts, seafood, and whole grains, has long been associated with numerous health advantages. As stroke remains a leading cause of mortality in the UK, implicated in over 34,000 deaths annually, this research sheds light on the potential for dietary choices to influence health outcomes.
Study Overview and Methodology
Conducted by a team of researchers from Greece and the United States, the study involved a substantial cohort of 105,614 women from California, with an average age of 53 at the outset. Importantly, all participants had no prior history of stroke. The women were asked to complete a detailed questionnaire regarding their dietary habits, which allowed researchers to assign scores reflecting adherence to the Mediterranean diet.
Participants were rated on a scale from zero to nine, based on their consumption of various food groups. Points were awarded for higher-than-average intakes of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, olive oil, and fish, as well as moderation in alcohol consumption. Conversely, individuals received lower scores for excessive intake of red meat and dairy products. The results indicated that 30% of the participants scored between six and nine, indicating strong adherence to the diet, while 13% fell into the lowest category with scores ranging from zero to two.
Findings and Implications
Throughout the study’s follow-up period, which averaged 21 years, a total of 4,083 strokes were documented, comprising 3,358 ischemic strokes and 725 hemorrhagic strokes. After adjusting for various confounding factors, including smoking habits, levels of physical activity, and blood pressure, the researchers found that those women who adhered most closely to the Mediterranean diet exhibited an 18% lower overall risk of stroke compared to those with the lowest scores. Specifically, they were 16% less likely to suffer an ischemic stroke and 25% less likely to experience a hemorrhagic stroke.
