Rob Holmes, a dedicated sports fan from Toronto, is celebrating over 30 years of organising a Masters Tournament office pool that has not only brought colleagues together but has also raised substantial funds for various charities. Since its inception in 1993, the pool has become a popular event, with this year’s goal set at an impressive £60,000 and counting.
A Long-Standing Tradition
Holmes, who began his professional journey at PwC, originally intended to organise an NCAA basketball pool. However, the overwhelming interest in golf among his colleagues led him to pivot to the Masters Tournament. “Everybody thought it was fun. So next year came around and I put it together again,” he reminisced from his home in Toronto. This grassroots initiative swiftly evolved from just 20 participants to a community of several hundred eager entrants.
A Charitable Twist
In 2012, Holmes contemplated discontinuing the pool due to the increasing workload it required. A timely suggestion from his brother changed everything; they decided to raise the entry fee from £10 to £20 and donate 25 per cent of the proceeds to charity. “I thought that was a good idea. I can suck it up a little bit and do the work, as long as I know money is going to charity,” Holmes recounted. To further enhance the impact, he committed to increasing the donation amount by 50 per cent.
Rather than the anticipated decline in participants, the pool flourished, with last year’s numbers reaching approximately 1,200 entrants. Since its launch, the Masters pool has raised around £60,000 for notable charities including Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, Make-A-Wish Canada, the Canadian Cancer Society, and the Daily Food Bank. Impressively, Holmes even donates the tax refund from the contributions back to the charities, ensuring that he derives no personal financial benefit from the endeavour.
A Unique Community Experience
Holmes has become well-known among participants for his detailed notes and insightful analyses. Despite his extensive experience running the pool, he has never clinched a victory or even placed in the top seven for the prize money. However, he has had the distinct pleasure of attending the Masters Tournament a couple of times, an experience he cherishes more than any monetary prize.
