In a candid statement, Valeria Chomsky, wife of renowned linguist Noam Chomsky, has publicly acknowledged the “grave mistake” made by the couple in associating with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. This admission follows the release of documents by the House oversight committee that have intensified scrutiny on Chomsky’s relationship with Epstein, particularly in light of Epstein’s notorious history of manipulation and crime.

A Disturbing Revelation

Valeria Chomsky expressed deep remorse for their failure to properly investigate Epstein’s background, describing their oversight as “careless.” In her statement, she revealed that both she and Noam were misled by Epstein, who presented himself as a benefactor and an intellectual ally. This deception took a toll on the couple, particularly for Noam, who has been grappling with health issues since suffering a stroke in 2023.

The relationship between the Chomskys and Epstein came under fire as public interest surged following Epstein’s arrest in July 2019 on charges of sex trafficking. Valeria acknowledged that while they had been aware of critical media coverage surrounding Epstein, it was not until his second arrest that the full extent of his crimes was revealed to them. “It was deeply disturbing for both of us to realise we had engaged with someone who presented as a helpful friend but led a hidden life of criminal, inhumane, and perverted acts,” she stated.

Misplaced Trust and Misguided Advice

The couple’s interactions with Epstein included attending dinners at his residences and engaging in discussions that Valeria now views as a strategic entrapment. Notably, Noam had provided Epstein with advice on how to combat negative press coverage, believing he was speaking from his own experiences of political controversies. Valeria clarified that Epstein’s narrative was manipulative, intended to foster sympathy while masking his true nature.

In her statement, Valeria explained that Noam’s counsel to Epstein should be seen in context. “Epstein had claimed to Noam that he was being unfairly persecuted,” she noted, emphasising that Noam’s intentions were never to downplay the severity of sexual abuse, but rather to offer support to someone he believed was victimised by a media frenzy.

The Complexity of Financial Transactions

Valeria Chomsky also addressed two financial exchanges between Epstein and Noam, shedding light on their motivations. One instance involved a $20,000 cheque that Epstein sent as part of a linguistic challenge initiated by Noam. The other transaction concerned Epstein assisting Noam in recovering $270,000 after he discovered inconsistencies in his retirement funds. Valeria clarified that these financial dealings were strictly for specific purposes and did not imply any broader investment relationship with Epstein.

She asserted that the Chomskys had no direct investments with Epstein’s financial firm and that he acted solely as a financial advisor in these instances. Nevertheless, Valeria recognised that these interactions could have been part of Epstein’s strategy to ingratiate himself with Noam and gain access to his influential stature.

Acknowledging the Deception

The Chomskys first encountered Epstein in 2015, unaware of his 2008 guilty plea for solicitation of prostitution involving minors. Valeria lamented that, by presenting himself as a philanthropist with an interest in science, Epstein successfully gained Noam’s attention and trust. “Unknowingly, we opened a door to a Trojan horse,” she remarked, reflecting on how Epstein’s charm and intellectual pretence led them astray.

As the couple navigated their relationship with Epstein, they remained oblivious to the dark realities surrounding him until they were forced to confront the truth following his arrest. “We regret that we did not perceive this as a strategy to ensnare us and to try to undermine the causes Noam stands for,” Valeria concluded.

Why it Matters

The Chomsky family’s experience serves as a stark reminder of the complexities of personal relationships in an era where public personas can often mask sinister intentions. As society grapples with the consequences of abuse and manipulation, Valeria Chomsky’s reflections underscore the necessity for vigilance and due diligence in our associations. The fallout from Epstein’s deception extends far beyond his immediate victims, reverberating through the lives of those who unwittingly became enmeshed in his web of deceit.
