The Dalai Lama has firmly denied ever meeting the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, following the emergence of a significant trove of documents that detail Epstein’s connections with influential figures. Named multiple times in the newly released files, the spiritual leader’s office has responded emphatically to social media speculation attempting to link him to Epstein.

New Revelations from Epstein Files

On 9 February 2026, the US Justice Department unveiled over three million pages of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein’s dealings, generating considerable media attention. Among the findings were numerous references to the Dalai Lama, particularly a 2015 email in which Epstein discussed arranging a dinner involving the Tibetan spiritual leader, renowned linguist Noam Chomsky, and filmmaker Woody Allen.

The emails indicated Epstein was keen to facilitate this high-profile gathering, with one message asking if the dinner was “fixed.” Epstein’s reply, however, contained no confirmation and simply stated “Talk Tomorrow.”

Dalai Lama’s Office Responds

In light of the renewed scrutiny, the office of the Dalai Lama released a statement on Sunday, categorically denying any meetings or interactions with Epstein. “We can unequivocally confirm that His Holiness has never met Jeffrey Epstein or authorised any meeting or interaction with him by anyone on His Holiness’s behalf,” the statement declared.

This denial comes as the Dalai Lama continues to be a prominent figure in Tibetan Buddhism, despite his political activities ceasing in 2011. He has lived in exile since 1959 due to the Chinese occupation of Tibet, and remains a central religious authority for the Tibetan community worldwide.

Past Controversies and Current Stance

The 90-year-old leader has previously faced criticism, notably in 2023, when footage surfaced of him engaging in what some perceived as inappropriate behaviour with a young boy during a public event. The incident sparked outrage, but Penpa Tsering, the head of the Tibetan government in exile, remarked that the Dalai Lama’s actions were merely “innocent” and a demonstration of his affectionate nature.

Following the backlash, the Dalai Lama’s office apologised for any distress caused, explaining that his playful teasing is typical of his interactions, although he expressed regret for the incident.

Why it Matters

The recent revelations surrounding Epstein and the Dalai Lama underscore the complexities of public figures navigating their associations, especially in the wake of scandals. As the investigation into Epstein’s extensive network continues, the Dalai Lama’s emphatic denial serves to clarify his position and protect his longstanding reputation within the Tibetan Buddhist community. This situation highlights the ongoing scrutiny of influential personalities and the need for transparency in their past connections, especially as society grapples with issues of accountability and ethical conduct.
