Joe Bennett, son of Lindsay and Craig Foreman, has urged UK officials to take swift action to secure their release from the notorious Evin prison, where they face starvation, medical neglect, and psychological torment.
A Harrowing Ordeal
Lindsay and Craig Foreman were arrested in January 2025 while travelling through Iran, facing baseless charges of espionage, which they vehemently deny. Their detention has sparked outrage and concern, particularly as reports emerge of inhumane treatment within the prison system. During a recent meeting with Members of Parliament (MPs), Bennett described the shocking human rights abuses his parents have endured, including threats of execution, overcrowded living conditions, and chronic medical issues.
“Since their arrest on January 3rd, 2025, my parents have experienced a catalogue of horrors that is difficult to comprehend,” Bennett stated. “We cannot afford to become desensitised to their suffering. We must act now.”
Conditions Behind Bars
Bennett, hailing from Folkestone in Kent, has revealed that his parents are enduring deplorable conditions. Forced to sleep on concrete floors without mattresses, they live in cramped, unsanitary cells infested with vermin. For an extended period, they were denied communication with the outside world for 213 days and subjected to 57 days of isolation and interrogation.
Following a hunger strike in November, the couple managed to regain limited contact with family members. However, the situation has worsened since a crackdown on protests across Iran, putting them at increased risk as UK citizens. Bennett emphasized that his father, Craig, is suffering from severe dental pain that remains untreated, and both parents are facing ongoing health issues without proper medical care.
The Call for Diplomatic Action
In a bid to garner support, Bennett has launched an online petition that has attracted over 60,000 signatures. He expressed frustration with the UK government’s passive approach, stating that waiting for “quiet diplomacy” is not a viable strategy.
