At approximately 2:20 p.m. on Tuesday, students in Jarbas Noronha’s class reported hearing what they believed to be gunfire. Just moments later, as alarms rang out, a student informed Mr. Noronha, a mechanical shop and applied science teacher, that the school was in lockdown after the principal had arrived at the classroom door.
Realising the gravity of the situation, Mr. Noronha quickly organised his 15 students, all in Grades 11 and 12, into a secure area of the mechanical shop. He barricaded the door with heavy benches, explaining, “The idea was just to buy us an extra three or four minutes if eventually somebody tried to break in.” With a calm but firm approach, he outlined an escape plan that involved using the garage door leading to the school’s backyard if necessary.
“I did not want them to panic,” he emphasised, highlighting the importance of keeping the students composed during such a terrifying ordeal.
The Aftermath of Violence

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the shooter, an 18-year-old local resident, was found dead at the school, along with a staff member and five students aged just 12 or 13. The shooter’s mother and 11-year-old stepbrother were discovered deceased at their family home, underscoring the widespread impact of the violence.
Reflecting on the events, Mr. Noronha expressed his disbelief at facing such a crisis in his role as an educator. “I never thought I was going to face that in my life as a teacher,” he remarked. “We always see that on the news, and it’s always somewhere else, distant, right?”
The emotional toll weighed heavily on him, especially after discovering that some of the victims had been in his class only 45 minutes prior to the tragedy. “They were just the sweetest little kids,” he recalled fondly.
A Community United
Since the shooting, the response from the Tumbler Ridge community has been remarkable. Following the evacuation, staff, students, and parents gathered at the local recreation centre, where the community rallied to provide food and support. Mr. Noronha described the scene: “We started helping, giving food to everybody, getting drinking water to everybody, organising to avoid any kind of chaos. Being in a major, major mobilization is amazing.”
His own journey to Tumbler Ridge is a testament to resilience. After a motorcycle trip that took him from Alaska to Brazil, he found himself in the town, where he eventually met his wife, a local resident. “I met her for the first time for 10 minutes on her lunch break, and she invited me to come over to Tumbler because she was moving there,” he shared, reflecting on the twists of fate that brought him to this close-knit community.
