Chief forecaster Jason Kelly highlighted the likelihood of settling snow in elevated areas, where accumulations of 2-5cm are expected. “As the rain and snow clear southwards, temperatures will fall quickly under clear skies, leading to potential ice formation on untreated surfaces,” he noted, warning that travel disruptions are anticipated.

With the temperature set to drop significantly, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a cold health alert for multiple regions. This alert will be in effect from 6am on Friday until 8am on Monday, affecting vulnerable populations who may experience increased health risks. In Cumnock, East Ayrshire, temperatures are predicted to reach a chilling -4°C on Friday night.
The UKHSA has cautioned that this cold spell may strain health and social care services, with a likely uptick in healthcare usage among those most at risk. Grahame Madge from the Met Office explained, “An Arctic Maritime airmass is moving south, bringing a colder influence to the UK’s weather.” While this chilly period is expected to be short-lived, it poses immediate concerns for public safety.
