Logan Thompson’s journey from obscurity to Olympic glory is a testament to resilience and determination. The 28-year-old goaltender, who has recently made waves as a key member of Canada’s men’s ice hockey team at the Winter Olympics in Milan, has transformed his career from being overlooked in the NHL draft to standing shoulder to shoulder with the sport’s elite at the highest level.
Early Challenges and Brock’s Offering
Thompson’s story began in the summer of 2018, when he arrived at Hamilton Airport, stepping off a plane with the stature of a professional athlete—standing at 6 feet 4 inches and weighing around 200 pounds. However, despite his impressive physique and solid performance with the Brandon Wheat Kings in the WHL, he faced a major hurdle: no NHL teams had shown interest, and he had not received any offers from minor professional leagues.
Luc Lobsinger, the goalie coach at Brock University, recognised an opportunity. With the Badgers in need of a netminder, he extended an offer to Thompson, assuring him of substantial playing time. “We told him, you’re going to play 90 to 95 per cent of the games here. That was big for him,” Lobsinger recalled. This chance marked the beginning of a significant turning point for Thompson’s career.
A Turning Point at Brock University
At Brock, Thompson flourished. His motivation and skills shone through during practices, where he would regularly face hundreds of shots, allowing only a couple to slip past him. “It’s not an exaggeration, it was crazy to watch. He hates getting scored on,” Lobsinger said, highlighting Thompson’s competitive nature. The atmosphere at Brock might not have been as electrifying as major junior hockey, but it provided Thompson with the perspective and freedom to enjoy the game without the pressures of high-stakes environments.

As Thompson honed his craft, NHL scouts began to take note. “There were probably five to six NHL teams that were tracking him throughout the year. So he was catching eyes,” Lobsinger explained. This visibility ultimately led to Thompson being signed by the Adirondack Thunder of the ECHL after a stellar season at Brock, paving the way for his ascent through the ranks.
From ECHL to NHL Stardom
Thompson’s path continued to ascend when the Vegas Golden Knights recognised his potential and signed him in 2020. After a brief stint in the minors, he made his NHL debut later that season. By 2022, he had secured the starting goaltender position in Vegas. Although an injury sidelined him during the Golden Knights’ Stanley Cup run in 2023, he had already established himself as a formidable presence in the league.
In 2024, following the decision to shift the starting role to Adin Hill, Thompson was traded to the Washington Capitals for two third-round picks. His time in D.C. solidified his status as a starter and eventually caught the attention of Team Canada selectors, leading to his current Olympic opportunity.
Grateful for the Journey
Now in Milan, Thompson reflects on his unconventional journey with gratitude. “It’s been a weird journey. I obviously never thought I’d be in the NHL. And being in the Olympics was definitely not even in the question,” he shared. Surrounded by iconic players like Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, and Connor McDavid, Thompson is both humbled and motivated, expressing a desire to contribute to Canada’s success. “All that matters in this tournament is winning games,” he stated emphatically.

His appreciation extends to those who supported him along the way. “I’m just really thankful for every coach and every goalie coach that has worked with me along the way. They all got me here,” Thompson said, underscoring the importance of mentorship in his development.
Why it Matters
Logan Thompson’s story is not merely one of personal triumph; it serves as a source of inspiration for countless athletes who face setbacks and challenges in their careers. His experience illustrates the power of perseverance and the impact of seizing opportunities, no matter how unlikely they may seem. As he competes for Olympic gold, Thompson embodies the spirit of hockey—one that celebrates hard work, resilience, and the unwavering belief that dreams can become reality.
