With the Badgers in need of a netminder, he extended an offer to Thompson, assuring him of substantial playing time. “We told him, you’re going to play 90 to 95 per cent of the games here. That was big for him,” Lobsinger recalled. This chance marked the beginning of a significant turning point for Thompson’s career.
A Turning Point at Brock University
At Brock, Thompson flourished. His motivation and skills shone through during practices, where he would regularly face hundreds of shots, allowing only a couple to slip past him. “It’s not an exaggeration, it was crazy to watch. He hates getting scored on,” Lobsinger said, highlighting Thompson’s competitive nature. The atmosphere at Brock might not have been as electrifying as major junior hockey, but it provided Thompson with the perspective and freedom to enjoy the game without the pressures of high-stakes environments.
As Thompson honed his craft, NHL scouts began to take note. “There were probably five to six NHL teams that were tracking him throughout the year. So he was catching eyes,” Lobsinger explained. This visibility ultimately led to Thompson being signed by the Adirondack Thunder of the ECHL after a stellar season at Brock, paving the way for his ascent through the ranks.
From ECHL to NHL Stardom
Thompson’s path continued to ascend when the Vegas Golden Knights recognised his potential and signed him in 2020. After a brief stint in the minors, he made his NHL debut later that season. By 2022, he had secured the starting goaltender position in Vegas. Although an injury sidelined him during the Golden Knights’ Stanley Cup run in 2023, he had already established himself as a formidable presence in the league.
In 2024, following the decision to shift the starting role to Adin Hill, Thompson was traded to the Washington Capitals for two third-round picks.
