In a harrowing case that has shocked the local community, Morsal Mohammed Naim, 32, has been sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of her two-year-old daughter, Omra Wali Jan. Omra, who tragically died from severe brain injuries, was found unresponsive in their home in Levenshulme, Manchester, in November 2023. The child’s father, Firooz Wali Jan, also 32, received a sentence of six years and nine months for child cruelty.

A Distressing Discovery

Emergency services were summoned on 30 November 2023, following reports of an unresponsive child. Upon arrival, paramedics were informed by Naim that Omra had choked on a biscuit. However, medical professionals soon uncovered a far more disturbing reality. Omra exhibited multiple unexplained injuries, including burns and bruises, as well as a fractured rib, which led doctors to suspect that the child had been violently shaken.

Following intensive medical assessment, it was determined that the brain injury was the primary cause of Omra’s death, which occurred in February 2024, three months after she was admitted to the hospital. Naim was the only adult present when the child sustained her fatal injury, raising serious concerns about her care and safety.

Parental Negligence Uncovered

The investigation into Omra’s tragic death unveiled a series of alarming details. Naim’s claims about the circumstances surrounding the child’s injuries were met with scepticism by law enforcement. In April 2024, Firooz Wali Jan was arrested in connection with the child’s burns and bruises. Despite his denials of any wrongdoing, he was later charged with child cruelty. Authorities described his explanations as “implausible,” further compounding the distressing nature of the case.

Detective Inspector Philip Reade, who led the investigation, labelled the events as “horrifying.” He emphasised that Omra’s parents had failed in their fundamental duty to protect their daughter. “The last few months of her life must have been truly miserable, being hurt by those who were meant to care for and protect her,” he stated.

A Call for Reflection

Following the sentencing, Alan Richardson from the Crown Prosecution Service expressed disbelief at the cruelty displayed in this case. “Morsal Mohammed Naim not only shook her daughter to death but then lied about what she had done,” Richardson lamented. He highlighted that, as a mother, Naim had a responsibility to safeguard her child, yet she inflicted catastrophic injuries that ultimately led to Omra’s demise.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of child welfare and the responsibilities entrusted to parents. The case has prompted discussions about the need for improved protective measures for vulnerable children.

Why it Matters

The devastating loss of Omra Wali Jan underscores a broader societal issue concerning child safety and parental responsibility. It raises pressing questions about the support systems in place to protect children from abuse and neglect. As communities come together to mourn this young life cut short, it is imperative that we reflect on our collective role in safeguarding the well-being of all children, ensuring that they are nurtured and protected in a safe environment.
