The alleged perpetrator, 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, reportedly killed her mother, Jennifer Jacobs, 39, and her 11-year-old stepbrother, Emmett Jacobs, at their home before moving on to the school. There, she opened fire, resulting in the deaths of five children and a teacher, before taking her own life.

Authorities have released the names of the victims, revealing that they included Kylie Smith, Abel Mwansa, Zoey Benoit, and Ticaria Lampert, all aged 12, along with 13-year-old Ezekiel Schofield and 39-year-old assistant teacher Shannda Aviugana-Durand. Two additional individuals, Maya Gebala, 12, and Paige Hoekstra, 19, are currently hospitalised with serious injuries.
Dwayne McDonald, the deputy commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, described the scene at the school as “chaotic,” with the sound of fire alarms ringing as officers responded to the emergency. He noted that the shooter appeared to be indiscriminately targeting anyone in sight, a situation that worsened until law enforcement intervened. Thankfully, there were no further injuries reported after police arrived.
In total, four firearms were confiscated, two from the family home and two from the school premises. This incident marks the deadliest school shooting in Canada since the tragic events in Nova Scotia in 2020, when a lone gunman killed 13 individuals.
