In the wake of troubling revelations regarding Peter Attia’s communications with the late Jeffrey Epstein, CBS News appears poised to retain the longevity expert as an on-air contributor. Despite internal dissent and public outcry, the network has yet to issue an official statement on Attia’s future, leaving staff and viewers questioning the decision.

Internal Consensus on Retention

Two weeks following the release of a substantial cache of documents detailing inappropriate exchanges between Attia and Epstein, CBS News staff members have reportedly reached an informal consensus that Attia will remain with the network. “Everyone internally unofficially concluded he was staying as of about a week ago,” disclosed a CBS News employee who spoke on condition of anonymity. However, the network’s leadership, including editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, has refrained from commenting publicly on the situation.

Attia, who was introduced as one of 19 new contributors during a CBS staff meeting on 27 January, is known for his expertise in longevity and preventative medicine. Despite his popularity, especially as the host of the podcast “The Peter Attia Drive,” some in the medical community have expressed scepticism about his claims and methodologies.

Controversial Communications Come to Light

The controversy surrounding Attia intensified following the Department of Justice’s release of documents revealing graphic emails exchanged between him and Epstein. In one notable correspondence from January 2016, Attia remarked, “I go into JE withdrawal when I don’t see him,” suggesting a personal connection that many find troubling. Prior to his hiring, it was already known that Attia had met with Epstein on multiple occasions.

In an email exchange, Attia hinted at being aware of Epstein’s dubious activities, stating, “You [know] the biggest problem with becoming friends with you? The life you lead is so outrageous, and yet I can’t tell a soul…” His communications also included inappropriate remarks, such as a lewd comment about a dietary preference, which have since drawn widespread criticism.

On 2 February, Attia issued a public apology, asserting he was never involved in any criminal actions related to Epstein. “I was never on his plane, never on his island, and never present at any sex parties. That said, I apologise and regret putting myself in a position where emails, some of them embarrassing, tasteless, and indefensible, are now public,” he stated. He acknowledged meeting Epstein approximately seven or eight times between 2014 and 2019 for research-related discussions.

Backlash from Colleagues and Medical Professionals

The decision to retain Attia has sparked significant backlash not only from CBS staff but also from medical professionals and former colleagues. Jennifer Ashton, a well-known medical correspondent, expressed her discontent on social media, stating, “The fact that CBS News hasn’t taken action is deeply troubling. People have been fired from network television for far less.” She raised concerns about the implications of morality clauses in broadcast journalism.

Similarly, menopause specialist Mary Claire Haver announced her decision to withdraw from an exclusive interview scheduled with CBS Mornings, citing Attia’s continued association with the network as a decisive factor. “This is my way of saying no, I’m not going to stand for this,” she declared in her Instagram post.

The Future of Attia at CBS News Remains Uncertain

While Attia remains on the payroll at CBS News, his immediate future on air is uncertain. The network had previously planned to re-air his interview on “60 Minutes” during Super Bowl Sunday, but scrapped those plans amid growing backlash. Attia has maintained a low profile since his apology, refraining from social media activity and not releasing new podcast episodes this month.

Despite encouragement from Weiss to utilise the network’s new contributors, individual programmes are not mandated to feature specific on-air talent, leaving Attia’s appearances largely at the discretion of the show’s producers.

Why it Matters

The situation surrounding Peter Attia raises significant questions about accountability and ethical standards in journalism, particularly in light of CBS News’s decision to retain a contributor with a controversial past. As public trust in media organisations hangs in the balance, how CBS navigates this controversy could set a precedent for the industry at large. The implications extend beyond Attia himself, potentially affecting how networks manage contributors and their reputations in an era increasingly scrutinised for integrity and transparency.
