A recent recall of baby food in the United States has raised alarms as Initiative Foods pulls a specific lot of its Tippy Toes brand Apple Pear Banana Fruit puree due to dangerously elevated levels of patulin, a harmful mycotoxin. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall, prompting consumers across the nation, aside from Alaska, to check their cupboards and dispose of affected products.

On Friday, the FDA issued a notice detailing the recall of Tippy Toes baby food items with a best-by date of July 17, 2026, and the package code INIA0120, which can be found on the bottom of each plastic tube. Each package, retailing at approximately £1.99, contains two containers of the puree. The FDA’s investigation revealed that these items exhibited patulin levels exceeding safe thresholds, leading to the urgent recall.
“Samples taken as part of the Total Diet Study indicated that the levels of patulin found in this product were higher than what is typically seen,” the FDA stated in its announcement. “In partnership with the FDA, Initiative Foods has identified the lot that needs recalling due to potential health risks.”
Health Risks Associated with Patulin
Patulin is a naturally occurring toxin produced by certain moulds that can infest various fruits, notably apples. Chronic exposure to patulin can pose significant health risks, including immune system suppression, nerve damage, and symptoms such as headaches, fever, and nausea. While no illnesses have yet been reported in connection with this recall, the FDA strongly advises any consumers experiencing health issues after consuming the product to consult their healthcare provider.

The recalled baby food was distributed across all U.S. states, with the exception of Alaska, and may have also reached U.S. territories like Guam and Puerto Rico.
