A devastating avalanche on Sunday morning in northern Italy has resulted in the deaths of two skiers and left another injured. The incident took place in the Couloir Vesses, a well-known freeride area in Courmayeur, part of the Mont Blanc massif and situated near the borders of France and Switzerland. The search and recovery efforts were extensive, involving a team of rescuers and air support.

The avalanche struck around 11:00 a.m., sweeping away three skiers as they navigated off-trail terrain. Following the tragedy, one of the skiers was rushed to hospital in critical condition but sadly did not survive. The identities of the victims have yet to be disclosed.
Italy’s Alpine Rescue service swiftly organised a recovery operation, deploying 15 rescuers, along with three canine units and two helicopters, to the scene to locate and assist those affected by the avalanche.
A Concerning Trend in Avalanche Safety
This tragic event is part of a worrying pattern, as it follows a particularly deadly week for backcountry enthusiasts in the Italian mountains, during which a record 13 individuals lost their lives due to avalanche-related incidents. The perilous conditions were primarily attributed to an unstable snowpack exacerbated by recent storms. Federico Catania, a spokesperson for the Alpine Rescue Corps, highlighted the dangers, stating, “Under such conditions, the passage of a single skier, or natural overloading from the weight of snow, can be sufficient to trigger an avalanche.”
Authorities emphasised that the fatalities occurred on ungroomed slopes, far from the monitored areas associated with the upcoming Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. Catania assured the public that the official ski resorts and Olympic venues remain safe, stating, “There is no danger for people skiing within managed ski resorts, and in particular no risks to the Olympic sites.”
Continued Risks in the Alpine Region
Despite reassurances about the safety of designated skiing areas, the unpredictable nature of mountain weather means that conditions can change rapidly. Recent snowfall, coupled with wind-driven snow accumulation on weak layers, has created a highly hazardous environment.
In a separate incident on the same day, a skier in Trentino found himself partially buried in another avalanche but was successfully rescued by his companions. This highlights the ongoing risks faced by those who venture into the backcountry, where conditions can be treacherous.
