Dr. Joss Reimer has been appointed as Canada’s chief public health officer, stepping into the role with a mission to address health misinformation and rebuild trust in public health institutions. Announced on Friday, Reimer emphasised the urgent need for a proactive strategy to combat the rapid spread of false health information, a challenge that has only grown since the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Commitment to Counter Misinformation

In her first interview following the announcement, Reimer, a Manitoba native, highlighted the unique difficulties posed by health misinformation. “One of the biggest challenges with health misinformation is the speed at which it changes, because it doesn’t take a lot of time to come up with a lie,” she remarked. This challenge is compounded by the fact that trust in health institutions has significantly eroded during the pandemic, a sentiment echoed by many Canadians who experienced hardships, including job losses and separation from loved ones.

“Because there was so much difficulty—people were losing jobs and income, people were being separated from loved ones. And whether or not those were right decisions, it was hard,” Reimer said, indicating the long road ahead for rebuilding trust. She anticipates that restoring confidence will be a task requiring several years of dedicated effort.

Reimer’s predecessors have faced intense public scrutiny during the pandemic, with Dr. Theresa Tam becoming a household name for her daily updates on the evolving situation. After serving eight years, Tam retired in June, leaving Reimer to fill her shoes during a critical juncture for Canadian public health.

Navigating a Period of Transition

Reimer is no stranger to high-pressure environments; she previously served as Manitoba’s chief medical officer and was instrumental in overseeing the province’s COVID-19 vaccination efforts. The importance of her new role cannot be overstated, especially as Canada confronts rising cases of vaccine-preventable diseases, including measles, alongside threats from avian influenza, HIV, and tuberculosis.

The Measles Crisis and Vaccine Hesitancy

One of Reimer’s immediate concerns is the resurgence of measles, a disease that has seen an alarming uptick in cases, leading Canada to lose its measles elimination status after holding it since 1998. “I come from a small town which is part of the measles outbreak and where we have seen a fair bit of vaccine hesitancy. We need to have partnerships from the ground up, from community leaders all the way to the federal government,” Reimer stated, underscoring the necessity of collaboration in combating vaccine hesitancy.

The situation is alarming not only for Canada but for neighbouring countries like the United States and Mexico, which are also at risk of losing their measles elimination status. Reimer noted that the infectious nature of measles, coupled with rampant misinformation, makes the current climate particularly concerning.

Rebuilding Trust in Public Health

Health Minister Marjorie Michel recognised the critical timing of Reimer’s appointment, stating that misinformation poses a significant threat to public health and wellbeing. “Canada is facing a resurgence of vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles and the ongoing impacts of the illegal drug crisis,” she cautioned.

Rebuilding Trust in Public Health

Reimer is acutely aware of the landscape of misinformation, which has been exacerbated by the declining reliability of information sources, particularly in the United States. “I know that there are still really amazing people in the American system doing wonderful work, and so I think that there’s a lot of ways that we can continue to work together,” she said, expressing her commitment to ensuring Canada delivers trustworthy health information independently.

Why it Matters

Dr. Joss Reimer’s appointment as chief public health officer comes at a crucial time for Canada. As misinformation continues to undermine public confidence in health measures, her focus on rebuilding trust and combating false narratives is essential. With the potential resurgence of vaccine-preventable diseases and the ongoing challenges posed by global health crises, Reimer’s leadership will play a pivotal role in safeguarding the health of Canadians. Her commitment to partnership, transparency, and community engagement will be vital in restoring public trust and ensuring that all Canadians have access to accurate health information.
