In a significant stride towards improved safety in Canadian football, Guardian Sports has unveiled the Guardian Flex chinstrap, designed to mitigate head impacts during play. Officially launched on Thursday, this innovative product aims to reduce the risks associated with face mask collisions, an area where traditional helmets often fall short. Already garnering attention from leagues such as the Canadian Football League (CFL), the chinstrap is poised to reshape protective measures in the sport.
A Game-Changer for Player Safety
The Guardian Flex chinstrap has been engineered to significantly lower head acceleration response metrics (HARM scores) by as much as 35 per cent, specifically targeting impacts that occur at the face mask. Research indicates that these types of collisions account for approximately half of all impacts in football, a critical area often overlooked by conventional helmet designs.
Erin Hanson, CEO and co-founder of Guardian Sports, expressed the importance of this advancement: “The Guardian chinstrap addresses a critical gap in football safety.” She highlighted that while the Guardian Cap, introduced over a decade ago, focuses on head-to-head and head-to-ground impacts, the new chinstrap is the first product aimed at enhancing protection where many hits occur.
The Guardian Cap Legacy
The Guardian Cap, which fits over a football helmet and is secured with elastic straps, has been lauded for its ability to reduce concussion risks by 15 to 34 per cent. Despite its effectiveness, it can be more conspicuous to spectators than the newly released chinstrap.
The chinstrap is designed with a hard outer shell and a foam insert featuring SoftShox technology, a hydraulic shock-absorbing mechanism that activates upon impact, ensuring better protection for players. Available for pre-sale since August, the chinstrap is compatible with all major helmet brands and retails for $69, coming in two sizes: small/medium and large/extra large.
CFL’s Commitment to Enhanced Safety
The CFL has been proactive in embracing new safety protocols, having mandated the use of Guardian Caps during training camps and regular-season contact practices in 2023. This initiative led to a remarkable 42 per cent reduction in concussions during training camps. The league has now extended the use of the Guardian Cap to include defensive backs and receivers, allowing players to wear them during games.
Each CFL franchise is currently evaluating the adoption of the Guardian Flex chinstrap, with expectations that all teams will include them in their equipment options this season. Players have the autonomy to choose their gear, including helmets and protective pads, and teams are required to provide approved options.
Broader Impacts on Canadian Football
The implications of the Guardian Flex chinstrap extend beyond the CFL, with U Sports, the governing body for Canadian university sport, also monitoring advancements in athlete safety equipment. Once approved for use by Football Canada, U Sports athletes will be permitted to utilise the chinstrap voluntarily during competitions and training, further promoting safety at the grassroots level.
The Guardian Cap has already made its mark in U Sports, with a number of players incorporating it into their practice routines. However, its regular-season usage remains limited, highlighting the ongoing need for enhanced safety measures in college football.
