The controversy erupted when a senior official, speaking under the condition of anonymity during a background briefing, asserted that Ottawa now believes India is no longer involved in meddling with Canadian domestic politics or intimidating Sikh activists advocating for an independent homeland in Punjab. Liberal MP Sukh Dhaliwal, a member of the Sikh community and representative for Surrey-Newton, vehemently condemned these statements.
“This view is disconnected from the reality confronting members of the Sikh community across Canada and contradicts assessments by national security and law enforcement agencies,” Dhaliwal stated, emphasising the need for Carney to clarify the government’s position and reassess the qualifications of the official responsible for the comments.
Government’s Response Remains Ambiguous
In a statement issued to The Globe and Mail, the Prime Minister’s Office acknowledged the establishment of regular communication channels on security matters between Canada and India but refrained from directly disavowing the senior official’s claims. Instead, the statement reiterated Canada’s commitment to combat any form of transnational repression and acknowledged an ongoing law enforcement dialogue with India.
Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree remarked that “there’s a lot more work to do” to ensure that Indian agents are not engaging in coercion within Canada. Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand did little to distance herself from the controversial remarks, though she maintained that the current Indo-Canadian security dialogue has been productive.
