The Toronto Raptors are grappling with maintaining focus and consistency during crucial moments of their matches, especially against the NBA’s elite squads. Following back-to-back defeats, players like Brandon Ingram have acknowledged the need for improved communication and a relentless pursuit of victory, even when leading. As the team prepares for upcoming challenges, the emphasis lies on learning from past mistakes and executing their game plan effectively.

Learning from Defeats

Ingram, an all-star player, expressed the importance of harnessing momentum when the Raptors find themselves with a lead. After their recent practice session at OVO Athletic Centre, he stated, “We have to be better at communicating when we have the momentum to keep the momentum… I think it falls on all of us.” The Raptors have repeatedly struggled to maintain their advantage; in their latest games against the Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs, they squandered significant leads.

On Tuesday night, Toronto led by as much as 10 points before succumbing to a 116-107 defeat against the Thunder. The following evening, they were up by 15 against the Spurs and entered the fourth quarter with a 12-point cushion, only to lose 110-107. These losses have highlighted the Raptors’ challenges, as they now hold a disappointing record of 4-15 against the league’s top 10 teams this season.

Focus on Consistency

During Friday’s practice, the need for consistency was a prominent focus for the Raptors. Ingram noted that the team reviewed their defensive lapses and miscommunications that had cost them dearly in recent outings. “We just had a few miscommunications that could have helped us out,” he remarked. The Raptors have now lost five games this season after holding double-digit leads, the highest number in the NBA.

Focus on Consistency

Head coach Darko Rajakovic pointed out that reversing this trend is not a simple fix. “It’s not a switch that can be flipped,” he stated. “We also had a bunch of games that we were down 10, 15 and we came back and won the game. So is the recipe to be 15 points down so we can get back in the game and win? Maybe there’s the solution, right?” Rajakovic emphasised that every play counts and execution remains paramount to their success.

Injury Concerns

Injuries have also played a significant role in the Raptors’ recent woes. Rookie centre Collin Murray-Boyles, responsible for defending the Spurs’ standout Victor Wembanyama, left the game early due to a sprained left thumb. Meanwhile, all-star Scottie Barnes suffered a quad contusion in the previous match against Oklahoma City, complicating the team’s ability to close out games effectively. While Murray-Boyles rested during Friday’s practice, Barnes participated fully, indicating his determination to contribute to the team’s efforts.

Despite their recent setbacks, Toronto (34-25) remains in playoff contention, currently sitting in fifth place in the Eastern Conference, just ahead of the Philadelphia 76ers. Ingram remains optimistic, highlighting the resilience of the team. “The thing that I love about this group is the resiliency,” he commented, referring to their ability to battle back from a 25-point deficit against the Thunder. “I’m just happy to be in those games, being able to go back to the film and learn and see what we can do better for the next game.”

Why it Matters

The Raptors’ struggle to maintain leads against top teams underscores a broader challenge in their quest for playoff success. As they aim to solidify their position in the Eastern Conference, addressing these issues is critical. Learning from their losses and developing a consistent approach will be essential if they hope to compete with the best in the league. With the playoffs on the horizon, the ability to execute under pressure could very well determine their fate.
