Speaking to an audience of approximately 100 business leaders in Mumbai, Carney articulated a vision for a renewed and ambitious partnership with the world’s fifth-largest economy, signalling a significant shift following a prolonged diplomatic freeze that has characterised Canada-India relations.

The backdrop of Carney’s remarks is rooted in a diplomatic standoff that began in 2023, when former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of involvement in the murder of a Canadian Sikh activist. This accusation led to the expulsion of six Indian diplomats from Canada, contributing to a chill in relations.
