This accusation led to a significant diplomatic fallout, culminating in the expulsion of six Indian diplomats from Canada in 2024, a move attributed to their involvement in a campaign of intimidation against Canadians.
Carney’s current initiative to mend these ties comes amid scrutiny over statements made by a senior official in his government, who suggested that India has ceased its alleged foreign interference in Canada. This assertion has faced immediate backlash from both security experts and Liberal MPs, who contend that the threats posed by foreign interference remain a pressing issue. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has emphasised that no nation is exempt from scrutiny regarding foreign meddling.

He emphasised the competitive advantage of Canada’s tax rates, which are markedly lower than those of the United States and half the average of G7 countries.
With around two million Canadians of Indian descent contributing to various sectors, Carney framed Canada as a natural ally for India, capable of facilitating access to the lucrative U.S. market. He pointed to the favourable trade conditions, noting that more than 85% of Canadian exports enter the U.S. tariff-free, a significant advantage in the North American market.
However, Canada’s previous diplomatic freeze has resulted in a loss of competitive edge in trade negotiations with India, as other countries such as the European Union and New Zealand have already secured favourable agreements, reducing barriers for their exports to India.
