Notably, inquiries from young males aged 15 to 24 surged by over 300%, underscoring a troubling trend in public health. The findings were published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, marking a critical examination of the consequences of expanded gambling access in the province.
Alarming Insights from the Study
The research, which draws upon data from ConnexOntario, a 24-hour helpline for mental health and addictions, highlights a staggering 96% overall rise in calls regarding gambling concerns since the introduction of regulated online gambling in Ontario. The surge is particularly pronounced among young men, with boys aged 15 to 24 experiencing a remarkable increase of 317%. In contrast, the number of calls from women remained unchanged, suggesting a demographic disparity that raises further questions about the impact of gambling on different groups.
Co-authors Ryan Forrest, a doctoral student at the University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health, and Daniel Myran, an associate professor at the same institution, expressed their alarm at the findings. Forrest noted the pervasive nature of gambling advertising in Ontario, prompting her to investigate whether this increase in visibility correlates with adverse health outcomes. Myran added, “The scale of these increases is really troubling. Gambling harms can affect not only individuals but also their families and broader communities.”

The study’s authors explored how the expansion of gambling options, particularly the legalisation of single-event sports betting, has contributed to this rise in gambling-related issues. Myran explained that prior to this expansion, gambling options were limited and involved traditional activities like slots and blackjack, but the introduction of in-play betting—where wagers can be placed during a game—has created an environment ripe for impulsive decisions. This rapid-fire betting format can exacerbate gambling behaviours, particularly among young, impressionable individuals.
Myran stated, “In-play betting allows for continuous wagering during sports events, which can lead to heightened emotional engagement and impulsivity.” The researchers emphasised the need for a broader dialogue about the societal implications of such gambling practices and questioned the appropriateness of allowing these types of betting to flourish unchecked.
