Television producer Jemima Goldsmith has been handed a £1,000 fine following a speeding incident involving a vehicle registered in her name. The case, which unfolded in Westminster Magistrates’ Court, drew attention not only because of Goldsmith’s public profile but also due to her claims of miscommunication stemming from ongoing construction work at her prestigious Kensington residence.

The Speeding Incident

On 25 August 2025, a Mini Clubman linked to Goldsmith was recorded travelling at 46mph in a 40mph zone on the A1 in Hampstead. When the Metropolitan Police reached out regarding the speeding violation, Goldsmith failed to respond in a timely manner, leading to her prosecution under a legal framework that penalises the failure to identify a driver.

Goldsmith, 52, eventually provided the name of Anthony Reilly, a resident of Switzerland, as the individual who had been driving the vehicle at the time of the offence. However, by the time she submitted this information on 4 November, she had already missed the police’s final response deadline, which contributed to her conviction.

Mitigating Circumstances

In a letter addressed to the court, Goldsmith attributed her lack of response to ongoing renovations at her £10 million home, claiming that essential mail had been misplaced by builders involved in the project. “Due to ongoing construction works at the property where my car is registered, which made access tricky, the original letter was mislaid by builders, and I was unaware of its existence until October,” she explained.

Mitigating Circumstances

The timing of her personal circumstances also played a role in her delayed response. Goldsmith mentioned the recent passing of her mother, Lady Annabel Goldsmith, in October 2025, which she said affected her usual attention to matters. “My PA who collects the post had been on annual leave in October and my mother died on 18th that month, so I was less on top of things than I am normally,” she added. Despite her explanations, the magistrate ruled against her.

Court Ruling and Penalties

Magistrate Gladys Famoriyo presided over the case and ruled in favour of the prosecution, imposing a fine of £1,000 on Goldsmith. Additionally, she received six penalty points on her driving licence, as well as being ordered to pay £130 in costs plus a £400 victim surcharge.

Goldsmith, who is professionally known as Jemima Khan, has had a varied career as a television producer, screenwriter, and magazine editor. Her public profile was further elevated by her marriage to former cricketer Imran Khan, who later became the Prime Minister of Pakistan. The couple shares two children.

Goldsmith’s conviction was processed through the Single Justice Procedure, a streamlined legal mechanism designed to expedite cases where defendants do not need to attend court in person. This approach allows magistrates to make decisions and impose sentences during closed hearings, which can often lead to swift resolutions.

In the previous week, Goldsmith was among nearly 2,000 defendants convicted for similar failures to identify drivers upon police request. This highlights a growing trend of legal repercussions faced by individuals who neglect to respond to traffic violations, with many losing their driving privileges as a result.

Why it Matters

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of communication and responsibility when it comes to vehicle ownership. Goldsmith’s high-profile status does not shield her from the law, nor from the scrutiny that accompanies it. As more individuals face legal repercussions for similar infractions, the incident underscores the necessity for all drivers to remain vigilant and proactive in addressing any correspondence from law enforcement, regardless of personal circumstances.
