It’s been a whirlwind couple of years for Derry Girls actress Nicola Coughlan, who joined the cast of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things for its fourth season. The 24-year-old Irish talent opened up about her experience navigating the highs and lows of her rapidly rising fame.

“It’s been a really weird couple of years, if I’m being honest,” Coughlan admitted in a recent interview. After gaining widespread acclaim for her portrayal of Clare Devlin in the beloved sitcom Derry Girls, the young actress found herself thrust into the global spotlight when she was cast in one of the most popular shows on television.

“I went from being a relatively unknown actor to being part of this massive, worldwide phenomenon,” she said. “It’s been exhilarating, but also incredibly overwhelming at times.”

Coughlan described the experience of filming Stranger Things season four as both thrilling and daunting. “The scale of production is just unlike anything I’ve ever been a part of before,” she explained. “The set, the crew, the sheer number of people involved – it’s all so massive and intense.”

Despite the challenges, the young actress said she felt incredibly grateful for the opportunity. “I know how lucky I am to be here. This is the kind of role that can really change the trajectory of an actor’s career,” she acknowledged.

However, Coughlan also candidly discussed the downsides of her newfound fame. “The attention and scrutiny can be really difficult to handle,” she admitted. “Suddenly, there are all these opinions and judgements about every aspect of your life, and it can be quite isolating.”

The actress said she has had to learn how to navigate the demands of being a public figure, from dealing with online trolls to managing the expectations of her growing fan base. “It’s a constant balancing act, trying to stay true to myself while also meeting the needs of the industry and the audience,” she explained.

Despite the ups and downs, Coughlan remains focused on the positive. “At the end of the day, I’m just grateful to be doing what I love,” she said. “This has been a wild ride, but I’m determined to make the most of it.”

As Stranger Things fans eagerly await the fifth and final season of the show, Coughlan’s star continues to rise. And while the journey may have been a “weird couple of years,” the young actress seems poised to navigate the challenges and embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.
