As we age, the natural effects of time can take a toll on our appearance and well-being. However, according to Dr Ian K Smith, author of ‘Eat Your Age’, there are dietary strategies we can employ to combat the signs of ageing and maintain a vibrant, youthful look.

Dr Smith, a renowned health and wellness expert, explains that the key lies in being intentional about the foods we consume. “What we put into our bodies has a direct impact on how we age, both inside and out,” he says. “By making conscious choices about the nutrients we give ourselves, we can slow down the ageing process and keep ourselves looking and feeling our best.”

One of the primary factors Dr Smith highlights is the importance of antioxidants. These powerful compounds help neutralise the free radicals that can damage cells and contribute to the visible signs of ageing, such as wrinkles and age spots. Foods rich in antioxidants, like berries, leafy greens, and fatty fish, should be staples in a youthful diet.

Collagen, the protein that gives our skin its elasticity, is another key consideration. As we age, our body’s natural collagen production decreases, leading to sagging and wrinkles. Dr Smith recommends incorporating collagen-boosting foods, such as bone broth, eggs, and certain types of meat, into our meals.

Gut health also plays a crucial role in overall well-being and appearance. “The health of our gut microbiome can have a significant impact on how we age,” Dr Smith explains. “Probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kefir, and fermented vegetables can help maintain a balanced gut, which in turn supports a strong immune system and radiant skin.”

Beyond specific nutrient-dense foods, Dr Smith emphasises the importance of portion control and maintaining a balanced diet. “Overeating, even of healthy foods, can lead to weight gain and other issues that can accelerate the ageing process,” he cautions. “It’s all about finding that sweet spot where we’re nourishing our bodies without overdoing it.”

Ultimately, Dr Smith’s advice boils down to a simple but powerful message: “By being mindful of what we eat, we can take an active role in staying youthful and vibrant as we grow older. It’s not about depriving ourselves, but rather making informed choices that support our long-term health and well-being.”
