For years, a modest local pub nestled near the five-a-side football pitches where the DisOrient FC team gathered weekly became a second home, forging bonds that extended far beyond the pitch. Every Tuesday from 2011 to 2016, the DisOrient FC team would convene at their familiar stomping ground, the Park Tavern, to decompress after their spirited matches. Despite its modest amenities – the Guinness on tap and the barely-functional toilets – this pub became a cherished sanctuary, a place where the team could commiserate over losses, celebrate victories, and cultivate the kind of deep, lasting friendships that transcend the game.
“Whatever else you might say about the Park Tavern, you can unequivocally say this: it is, without question, the closest pub to the five-a-side pitches where my team DisOrient FC used to play,” reflects Michael Okonkwo, a founding member of the team. “It was close. It served Guinness. And it had (just about) functioning toilets. That was really all we needed.”
In an era when many local pubs are struggling to survive, the Park Tavern managed to carve out a special niche, becoming an integral part of the DisOrient FC team’s identity. It was here, amid the familiar surroundings and the camaraderie of teammates, that the bonds of friendship were forged and strengthened, creating memories that would endure long after the final whistle had blown.
“That pub was our second home,” Okonkwo says. “It was where we’d go to drown our sorrows after a tough match, or to celebrate a hard-fought victory. It was where we’d sit and talk for hours, sharing our hopes, our dreams, and our struggles. It was more than just a watering hole – it was a place where we could be ourselves, without judgment, and really connect with one another.”
As the years passed and the team’s members went their separate ways, the Park Tavern remained a touchstone, a place where they could always return and recapture the sense of belonging and community that had been so integral to their shared experiences.
