In a cosy studio tucked away in Sheffield, Lee Smith, a 45-year-old former clinical engineer, is meticulously crafting intricate miniature worlds that transport viewers back in time. What began as a childhood hobby fueled by hours spent building Airfix kits has blossomed into a thriving business, Sheffield Miniatures, where Lee’s attention to detail and creative flair breathe life into scenes inspired by everyday life, long-forgotten buildings, and cherished memories.

Lee’s passion for miniatures was ignited at a young age, and his knack for recreating intricate details later led him to a career in the NHS. But in 2016, he took the plunge and established his own business, Sheffield Miniatures. In 2024, the venture expanded further when fellow miniature maker John Gittens retired, and Lee incorporated JG Miniatures into his enterprise.

“As long as I’ve got a photo to work from, I can usually recreate it,” Lee explains, showcasing his ability to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. From narrowboats to the iconic River Don Engine, Lee’s creations span a wide range of subjects, but the most common requests are for keepsakes and miniatures for toy soldier collectors.

One of Lee’s most personal projects is a meticulously crafted 1980s living room, inspired by his own childhood memories. The scene, which took three years to complete, features a yellow sofa with a floral pattern, paintings on the walls, a glowing gas fire, and nostalgic games like Connect Four and Monopoly. “It’s just literally everything I remember from my childhood,” he says, reflecting on the joy of bringing those memories to life.

While Lee’s work has garnered widespread acclaim, he remains humble about his artistic abilities. “I’ve never considered myself an artist, but a lot of people do call me that,” he says. “I just enjoy the challenge of creating something and making it look as real as possible.”

Whether it’s recreating the intricate workings of the River Don Engine or the historic Shepherd Wheel, Lee’s attention to detail and passion for his craft are evident in every miniature he produces. His creations not only preserve the past but also serve as a testament to the power of imagination and the enduring allure of the miniature world.
