As New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani explores innovative ways to address the cost-of-living crisis, he has found inspiration across the pond in Scotland’s pioneering baby box scheme. In a gesture of international cooperation, the Scottish Government has gifted the young mayor a sample baby box, aiming to assist him in developing a similar programme for families in the Big Apple.

The baby box initiative, launched in Scotland in 2017, provides every new mother with a sturdy cardboard box filled with essential items for their newborn, including clothing, books, and a digital thermometer. The box itself can even be used as a safe sleeping space, helping to promote safe sleeping practices. Over 360,000 Scottish families have benefited from the scheme to date, with around 90% of parents continuing to take up the offer.

Shirley Anne-Somerville, Scotland’s Social Justice Secretary, expressed her enthusiasm for collaborating with Mayor Mamdani on this issue, stating, “I read with interest that Mayor Mamdani was considering a baby basket scheme in New York and hope that, by sending a Scottish example, it will provide inspiration to help him to refine and develop his exciting policy.”

The Scottish Government’s gesture is more than just a symbolic exchange; it represents a genuine desire to share knowledge and best practices across the Atlantic. Somerville emphasised the shared history and heritage between Scotland and New York, noting that the city’s annual Tartan Week celebrations are a testament to these deep-rooted connections.

“I’m proud that we can also share a commitment to tackling child poverty and addressing the cost-of-living for the people that we serve,” Somerville added. “Scotland’s baby box provides much needed essentials for when a child enters the world, and it recognises the financial burden of those first few months of parenthood.”

As Mayor Mamdani explores the feasibility of implementing a similar programme in New York, the Scottish Government has offered to work closely with his administration, sharing insights and lessons learned from their own experience. This transatlantic collaboration represents a promising step towards addressing the challenges faced by families in both cities, demonstrating the power of cross-border cooperation and the exchange of innovative policy ideas.
