Air Canada Expands International Reach with Order of Eight Airbus A350-1000s

In a significant move to modernise its fleet and enhance its international operations, Air Canada has announced an order for eight Airbus A350-1000 aircraft. The Montreal-based airline’s latest acquisition marks a pivotal step in its strategy to strengthen its long-haul capabilities, with deliveries expected to commence in the latter half of 2030. This order also includes options for an additional eight planes, showcasing Air Canada’s commitment to expanding its global footprint.

A Leap in Fuel Efficiency and Comfort

The Airbus A350-1000 promises to be a game changer for Air Canada, boasting a fuel efficiency improvement of 25 per cent compared to older models. This advancement not only reduces operational costs but also enhances reliability and payload capacity. John Di Bert, Chief Financial Officer of Air Canada, highlighted the strategic nature of this investment, stating, “The addition of the Airbus A350-1000 to our fleet is a forward-looking investment that strengthens Air Canada’s long-term cost efficiency.” He emphasised that the new aircraft will bolster the airline’s operational economics, making it more competitive in the global aviation market.

While Air Canada has not disclosed the specifics of the purchase price, the last known list price for the A350-1000 was US$366.5 million, according to Airbus’s 2018 figures. However, it is common for airlines to negotiate substantial discounts on such deals.

Advanced Technology and Passenger Experience

Assembled in Toulouse, France, the A350-1000 is powered by the state-of-the-art Rolls-Royce XWB97 engine and has an impressive range of approximately 9,000 nautical miles. Air Canada has also emphasised the aircraft’s design, which includes the quietest cabin in the industry, pressurised at 6,000 feet to mitigate jet lag and enhance passenger comfort. Mark Galardo, Chief Commercial Officer of Air Canada, remarked, “This state-of-the-art aircraft adds a new dimension to Air Canada’s long-haul capabilities, with impressive range, enhanced payload, and proven economics that unlock new possibilities for long-haul flying for our customers.”

The new A350s will feature an updated interior layout, which Air Canada plans to unveil later this year. This commitment to passenger comfort and modern design underscores the airline’s focus on enhancing the travel experience.

Broader Fleet Modernisation Plans

The A350-1000 order comes as Air Canada prepares to introduce 14 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners into its fleet later this year. Additionally, the airline has plans to incorporate Airbus A321s, Canadian-made Airbus A220s, and Boeing 737 Maxes. This strategic expansion aims to broaden Air Canada’s international network, with new destinations set to be announced across Europe, Asia, and Latin America for the upcoming summer and winter seasons.

As Air Canada works to enhance its service offerings, the airline is poised to tap into new markets and cater to an increasing number of global travellers.
