As the Scottish Parliament prepares to adjourn ahead of the May elections, MSPs are facing a pivotal decision on the Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults (Scotland) Bill. The proposed legislation, introduced by Liberal Democrat MSP Liam McArthur, would allow terminally ill, mentally competent adults to seek medical assistance to end their lives.

The bill has already cleared its first hurdle, with Holyrood backing the general principles by 70 votes to 56 last May. However, the path to becoming law remains uncertain, with several MSPs who initially supported the bill now wavering.

SNP MSP Audrey Nicoll, a former police officer, has withdrawn her backing, citing concerns over potential coercion and the need for more robust safeguards. Other undecided MSPs, such as Conservative Brian Whittle and Miles Briggs, have also expressed reservations about the practicalities of the bill.

The fate of the legislation now rests in the hands of a small number of MSPs, who will cast their votes in the final stage of the parliamentary process sometime in March. With the issue sparking strong opinions both within and outside the Holyrood chamber, the decision could prove to be one of the most significant ever faced by the Scottish Parliament.

Liam McArthur, the MSP steering the bill through, has expressed disappointment over the withdrawal of support from some colleagues. He has, however, pledged to bring forward further amendments at the final stage, which he believes will “help strengthen and clarify” the legislation.

The debate over assisted dying has long been a contentious one, with proponents arguing that individuals should have the right to choose how to end their lives, while opponents raise concerns about potential coercion and the need to protect the vulnerable. As the Scottish Parliament prepares to make its historic decision, the outcome hangs on a knife-edge, with the country closely watching the unfolding events.
