His parents picked him up, but he has remained largely confined to a hiding place, venturing out only under the cover of darkness due to the omnipresent threat of violence. “They will kill anyone here. There is death everywhere,” he lamented during a phone call from his secret location.

After being detained in Maryland, Oscar was moved to a detention centre in Louisiana, where he was informed that his asylum case was being severed from his family’s. When he attempted to file an asylum application independently, he was met with further complications, as the DHS sought to deport him to Guatemala instead—a country he had passed through and faced danger in during his journey to the US.
Elora Mukherjee, director of Columbia Law School’s Immigrants’ Rights Clinic, emphasised the precarious nature of the current immigration landscape. “Once a person is out of the United States, it’s often extraordinarily difficult to secure permission from the US government to have them brought back,” she explained, underscoring the growing fears among many asylum seekers facing similar fates.
