A pioneering reintroduction of European bison in the woodlands of Kent is yielding significant ecological benefits just a few years after their arrival. Their presence has already led to the birth of seven calves, signifying a healthy and growing population. Hannah Mackins, a bison and conservation grazing ranger, noted, “Walking through there, we have a lot more light on the woodland floor, we have species growing through that wouldn’t have had before.”

In addition to these benefits, studies from similar projects in the Netherlands reveal an uptick in bird populations using bison fur for nesting insulation, which enhances chick survival rates. It is hoped that analogous results will emerge in Kent, further highlighting the multifaceted benefits of reintroducing large herbivores into ecosystems.
