The Caldwell family, enjoying a holiday 250 kilometres south of Perth, found themselves in a life-threatening predicament when their inflatable paddleboards and kayak were pushed out to sea by powerful winds. Initially, the boy attempted to return to shore using the kayak to summon help. However, the vessel began to take on water, forcing him to abandon it. With no other option, he plunged into the turbulent sea and swam approximately 4 kilometres back to land, alerting authorities to his family’s plight.

At around 6pm on Friday, Western Australia police were notified that a family had been washed out to sea. In response, a coordinated multi-agency search and rescue operation was launched, involving local marine rescue volunteers, WA water police, and a rescue helicopter.
By 8:30pm, the family—comprising the mother, aged 47, and her two children, aged 12 and 8—was located clinging to a paddleboard about 14 kilometres offshore. They had spent hours struggling against the rough seas before being spotted by the rescue helicopter.
