The group emphasises that Canadians have a right to know specifics about the firearms involved in the shooting at Tumbler Ridge, which occurred on February 10, when 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar claimed the lives of her mother, her half-brother, five students, and an educational assistant before turning the gun on herself.
Advocates argue that disclosing verified details about the firearms could potentially aid in preventing similar tragedies in the future. The letter points out that sufficient information is critical in discussions surrounding potential legislative reforms aimed at curbing mass shootings and gun violence across Canada.

Since the incident, the RCMP has been reticent to provide specific details regarding the weapons used, disclosing only that four firearms were involved—two at the home of the shooter and two at the high school. Among these was an unregistered shotgun. Retired RCMP officer Frank Grosspietsch, who examined the image, identified several weapons, including what appeared to be semi-automatics and shotguns.
