In the wake of the tragic Tumbler Ridge school shooting, a coalition of notable gun control activists, including representatives from the École Polytechnique survivors’ group, have expressed deep concern regarding the lack of clarity from the RCMP concerning the firearms involved. In an open letter addressed to RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme, the advocates are urging for immediate transparency regarding the types and legal status of the guns utilised in the incident, asserting that such information is vital for public awareness and preventative measures against future violence.
Advocates Demand Clarity
The letter, spearheaded by Heidi Rathjen, lead organiser of PolySeSouvient, is supported by various community representatives including Angie’s Angels, Canadian Doctors for Protection Against Guns, the Danforth Families for Safe Communities, and the Islamic Cultural Centre in Quebec City. The group emphasises that Canadians have a right to know specifics about the firearms involved in the shooting at Tumbler Ridge, which occurred on February 10, when 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar claimed the lives of her mother, her half-brother, five students, and an educational assistant before turning the gun on herself.
Advocates argue that disclosing verified details about the firearms could potentially aid in preventing similar tragedies in the future. The letter points out that sufficient information is critical in discussions surrounding potential legislative reforms aimed at curbing mass shootings and gun violence across Canada.
Limited Information from Authorities
Since the incident, the RCMP has been reticent to provide specific details regarding the weapons used, disclosing only that four firearms were involved—two at the home of the shooter and two at the high school. Among these was an unregistered shotgun. While it has been acknowledged that some weapons had previously been confiscated from the shooter’s residence, further specifics regarding their origins or conditions surrounding their seizure remain unclear.
Families of victims have begun pursuing legal avenues against artificial intelligence companies, indicating a complicated path ahead. Meanwhile, a media consortium, including The Globe and Mail, is actively seeking access to records pertaining to the shooting, particularly those concerning the firearms involved. The RCMP has repeatedly declined to comment on inquiries about the weapons, stating that the investigation is ongoing and details will be withheld until its conclusion.
The Need for Legislative Change
Heidi Rathjen voiced her frustration over the lack of verified information, asserting that without clarity on how the shooter obtained the firearms, it is impossible for the public to engage in meaningful discourse about potential changes to gun laws. “If we don’t know how a perpetrator of a mass shooting got access to the weapons they used or to the type of gun, then how are we supposed to change our laws to prevent the next mass shooting?” she stated emphatically.
Compounding the issue, a photograph posted on social media by the shooter’s mother in August 2024 shows a collection of firearms, including a KRISS Vector semi-automatic rifle—a weapon that, at the time of posting, was not classified as restricted but was later deemed prohibited in December 2024. This raises critical questions about the timing of the government’s regulations and whether the delay in implementing a buyback programme contributed to the tragic outcomes of that fateful day.
Retired RCMP officer Frank Grosspietsch, who examined the image, identified several weapons, including what appeared to be semi-automatics and shotguns. The details surrounding the KRISS Vector, in particular, are crucial for understanding the implications of the federal government’s strategies regarding assault-style weapons, as expressed by Rathjen. “Did the availability and, you know, the delays in the buyback contribute to the death toll? We don’t know,” she lamented.
Why it Matters
The ongoing silence from the authorities regarding the specifics of the firearms used in the Tumbler Ridge shooting not only hampers public understanding but also stifles necessary discussions on gun control policy reforms. The advocacy for transparency highlights a critical intersection of public safety and legislative accountability. As communities grapple with the aftermath of such tragedies, the demand for clarity becomes not just a matter of interest, but an essential step towards preventing future violence and ensuring that laws are robust enough to safeguard citizens.
