Tensions ran high at the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations as former football star Samuel Eto’o, now the president of Cameroon’s football federation (Fecafoot), was handed a four-match ban and a $20,000 fine by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for misconduct during a quarter-final match.
The incident occurred during Cameroon’s 2-0 loss to tournament hosts Morocco. Eto’o, who had a storied playing career with clubs like Barcelona and Inter Milan, was reportedly seen making an angry gesture towards the match officials over some of their decisions. CAF president Patrice Motsepe, who was present at the stadium in Rabat, appears to have witnessed Eto’o’s frustration firsthand.
In a statement, CAF announced that it was launching an investigation into “violent confrontations and unacceptable behaviour of some players and officials” during the quarter-final matches. Fecafoot, however, swiftly rejected CAF’s decision, describing the disciplinary process as one that “raises serious reservations about the fundamental requirements of a fair trial”.
The football federation expressed its support for Eto’o, suggesting that he would appeal against the sanctions. Since taking on the role of Fecafoot president in 2021, Eto’o’s tenure has been marred by controversies and allegations of improper conduct and poor management, with some stakeholders also complaining of grave irregularities within the organisation.
Eto’o, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest African footballers of all time, has often rejected such allegations, highlighting his achievements at the helm of Fecafoot. However, this latest incident has further tarnished his image as a football legend and administrator.
The disciplinary action taken by CAF against Eto’o underscores the ongoing challenges facing the governance of African football, as the continent’s governing body seeks to maintain the integrity of its flagship tournament. The outcome of Eto’o’s potential appeal will be closely watched by football fans and stakeholders across Africa and beyond.
