As anticipation builds for the FIFA World Cup 2026, Canada is poised to engage its citizens with a cross-country celebration programme. Announced by FIFA on Wednesday, ‘Canada Celebrates’ will make 38 stops in 34 cities from Halifax to Whitehorse between June 1 and July 19, culminating in an exciting festival of football that embraces the diversity of the nation.

Nationwide Festivities Planned

The festivities kick off in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador, with a friendly match against Uzbekistan in Edmonton on June 1. This will set the stage for the tournament, which officially begins on June 11 in Mexico City and Guadalajara. The final leg of the celebration tour will take place in Brampton and Niagara Falls, Ontario, on July 19, the same day as the championship match in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

FIFA Vice President and CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani emphasised the tour’s goal of bringing “FIFA World Cup energy” within easy reach of over 75 per cent of Canadians. “This really wraps up, sort of in a big hug, the diversity and the breadth and width of our country,” he remarked, highlighting the inclusive spirit of the initiative.

A Festival of Football

Montagliani described the events as a “real festivity of football,” where attendees can enjoy matches on large screens, partake in family games, and relish food and music from various cultures. “It’s a real festival of what football and the community really is. It’s a real Canadiana feeling in the end,” he added, expressing his hope that this celebration can become a legacy for future World Cups.

The concept of a nationwide celebration has been a cornerstone of Canada’s bid to host World Cup matches for over eight years. Montagliani believes that ‘Canada Celebrates’ could serve as a model for other countries hosting the tournament in the future.

Growing Excitement for the Tournament

With less than 70 days until the tournament kicks off, excitement is palpable. Montagliani noted an increase in World Cup merchandise seen on the streets and shared his recent experience attending the grand reopening of Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. He reflected on the significance of hosting the World Cup on home soil, stating, “To have them in your own country is almost a bit of an out of body experience.”

Canada’s first match will be against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12, followed by two more group stage matches in Vancouver against Qatar and Switzerland on June 18 and June 24, respectively. Toronto is set to host six matches, while Vancouver will stage seven.

Preparations Underway

As the excitement mounts, preparations are ongoing to ensure both Toronto and Vancouver are ready. B.C. Place Stadium and BMO Field are currently undergoing renovations, with BMO Field set to be renamed Toronto Stadium during the tournament. Plans for fan events in both cities are also being finalised, ensuring that the atmosphere is vibrant and welcoming for both locals and international visitors.

Montagliani concluded, “The beauty about the World Cup, it’s about a country. And I know that this country has always risen to the occasion in terms of big events, and this is going to be no different.”

Why it Matters

The ‘Canada Celebrates’ tour is not just an exciting precursor to the World Cup; it represents a unique opportunity for Canadians to come together and celebrate their multicultural heritage through the lens of football. This initiative reflects the nation’s pride and unity, while also setting a precedent for how future World Cups can engage with host nations. As Canada prepares to welcome the world, this celebration serves as a reminder of the power of sport to unite communities and foster a sense of belonging.
