As the countdown to the FIFA World Cup 2026 begins, Canada is set to embrace the excitement with a nationwide tour dubbed “Canada Celebrates.” Announced on Wednesday by FIFA, the tour will encompass 38 events in 34 cities, allowing fans from coast to coast to get in on the action from June 1 to July 19. The initiative aims to unify the nation in celebration of the world’s most prestigious football tournament, which will see cities like Vancouver and Toronto hosting matches alongside their counterparts in the United States and Mexico.

A Nationwide Festivity

The inaugural event kicks off in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland and Labrador, on June 1, coinciding with a friendly match between Canada and Uzbekistan in Edmonton. The tour will culminate in Brampton and Niagara Falls, Ontario, on July 19, just before the championship match in East Rutherford, New Jersey. FIFA Vice President and CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani emphasized the significance of this cross-country celebration, noting that it will spread “FIFA World Cup energy” within a two-hour drive of over 75% of Canadians.

“This really, I think, wraps up, sort of in a big hug, the diversity and the breadth and width of our country,” Montagliani remarked. “It’s a sort of a festivity of football, where you can go watch the game on the big screen, interact with games for families, enjoy food, and experience music. It’s a real festival of what football and community are about—a true expression of Canadiana.”

Legacy of Celebration

The concept of a national celebration was integral to Canada’s bid for hosting World Cup matches, which was submitted over eight years ago. Montagliani believes that “Canada Celebrates” could set a precedent for future host nations, showcasing how a country can come together through sport and culture.

“I think it’s something we could give as Canadians to the World Cup moving forward,” he stated, highlighting the potential for this initiative to inspire similar projects around the globe.

As the tournament is just under 70 days away, anticipation is building. With the opening matches scheduled for June 11 in Mexico City and Guadalajara, the excitement is palpable.

Preparing for the Games

Canada’s first match in the tournament will be against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12, followed by encounters with Qatar and Switzerland in Vancouver. Toronto will host six matches, while Vancouver will stage seven, with preparations well underway.

Montagliani, who recently attended the grand reopening of Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, is witnessing the growing enthusiasm first-hand. “I’ve been around the game my whole life, and been around it internationally for 20 years. To have them in your own country is almost a bit of an out-of-body experience,” he shared. “It’s something you thought could never happen. A lot of people should take pride in the work that’s been done over the last 20 years to get Canada to this point.”

However, preparations are still in progress, with upgrades to B.C. Place Stadium and BMO Field—the latter of which will be temporarily renamed Toronto Stadium during the tournament. Fan events are also being meticulously organised in both cities to ensure a memorable experience for attendees.

Why it Matters

The upcoming FIFA World Cup represents more than just a series of matches; it embodies a unique opportunity for Canada to showcase its culture and passion for football on the global stage. The “Canada Celebrates” tour aims to foster a sense of community and national pride, allowing fans from all walks of life to engage with the sport and each other. This initiative not only promises to enhance the excitement of the tournament but could also leave a lasting legacy, inspiring future generations to embrace the beauty of football and the spirit of unity it brings.
