In a significant development, the Montreal police apprehended Bryan Fuentes Gramajo, the most wanted fugitive in Canada, on Thursday. His arrest is linked to the tragic shooting death of 28-year-old Kashif Jamal Bentley-Jean at Yorkdale Mall this summer, marking a pivotal moment in a high-profile investigation.
Arrest and Charges
The 23-year-old Fuentes Gramajo, a resident of Longueuil, Quebec, was apprehended by the Service de Police de la Ville de Montreal (SPVM). He has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the fatal incident that occurred on July 15, which resulted in the death of Bentley-Jean, identified as Toronto’s 21st homicide victim of the year.
Toronto police Chief-Superintendent Joe Matthews, when announcing the “Be on the Lookout” (BOLO) list in October, emphasised the seriousness of Fuentes Gramajo’s alleged crimes. “You don’t make it to number one … for stealing a car,” Matthews stated, highlighting the threat he poses to public safety.
The Incident
The fatal shooting took place early in the morning, around 6:13 a.m., when police received reports of gunfire at Yorkdale Mall. Upon their arrival, they discovered Bentley-Jean in the parking lot, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the prompt response, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene, underscoring the violent nature of the incident.

Fuentes Gramajo was one of three individuals sought in relation to the case. Previously, 20-year-old Bradley Lucate Nicolas was arrested last August and also charged with first-degree murder. Meanwhile, a third suspect, 28-year-old Jimmy Prudent, remains at large and is actively wanted for the same charge.
A Wider Context
The case has garnered significant media attention, not only due to the violent crime but also because of the ongoing issues surrounding gang violence in urban Canada. The Zone 43 gang, to which Fuentes Gramajo is allegedly linked, has roots in Montreal and extensive connections across Ontario and British Columbia. This highlights the complex web of gang-related activities that transcend provincial borders, making the fight against such organisations increasingly challenging for law enforcement.
As investigations continue, police have urged anyone with information about the case or the whereabouts of Jimmy Prudent to step forward.
Why it Matters
The arrest of Bryan Fuentes Gramajo serves as a critical reminder of the persistent challenges posed by gang violence in Canadian cities. With public safety at stake, this case underscores the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to tackle organised crime and improve community safety. The repercussions of such violent incidents ripple through communities, raising questions about police effectiveness and the broader implications for urban life in Canada.
