In an effort to address ongoing challenges in net, the Montreal Canadiens have made a significant coaching change. On Wednesday, Jeff Gorton, the team’s president of hockey operations, announced the dismissal of goaltending coach Eric Raymond, who had been in position since the 2021-22 season. Marco Marciano, previously the goaltending coach for the AHL’s Laval Rocket, has been appointed as Raymond’s interim replacement for the remainder of the season.

A Tough Decision

Gorton expressed regret over the decision to part ways with Raymond, acknowledging the contributions he has made to the team. “This is an unfortunate part of the business. Eric’s done a lot of good things for us. We’ve had some success with the goalies under Eric, so this is not a one-person reflection,” he stated to reporters. The organisational shift aims to inject new energy into the team’s performance on the ice.

“Marco has history with our goalies and some success, so we just felt like at this time it was the right move,” Gorton added, highlighting Marciano’s familiarity and rapport with the players.

Goaltending Woes Continue

The Canadiens’ goaltending situation has been a source of concern throughout the season. Incumbent Sam Montembeault, who was named to Canada’s 4 Nations Face-Off roster last year, has struggled with a .868 save percentage and a 3.46 goals-against average (GAA) this season. This marks a stark decline from his previous season, where he achieved a .902 save percentage and a 2.80 GAA. Montembeault previously worked with Marciano during a conditioning loan with the Rocket in December, which may bode well for their collaboration moving forward.

Gorton emphasised Marciano’s credentials, stating, “Marco’s an intelligent guy. Works hard. He’s got a good rapport with his goalies. Everybody that we know speaks highly of him.” He also noted that other teams in the league had shown interest in Marciano, indicating a strong reputation within the hockey community.

Developing Young Talent

In light of the team’s goaltending struggles, the Canadiens made the decision to call up 21-year-old Jacob Fowler from Laval earlier than planned. Fowler had initially impressed with a .902 save percentage and a 2.62 GAA across ten NHL starts, but he was sent back to the Rocket on January 16 to streamline the goaltending rotation. Gorton reiterated the team’s commitment to Fowler’s development, saying, “With Fowler, every decision we make with him is (to) develop in the right way. We spend a lot of time thinking about what’s next for him and getting him enough starts, getting him enough practices.”

Current Standing and Future Outlook

Despite their goaltending issues, the Canadiens (29-17-7) currently occupy the Eastern Conference’s first wild-card spot, although they rank 25th in the league in team save percentage at .879. Gorton remains optimistic about the team’s prospects in net. “We believe in our goalies and we’re very comfortable,” he remarked. He also cautioned against placing all the blame on the goalies, insisting that responsibility lies with the entire team. “It’s not just the goalies; any time something like this happens, it’s on all of us, so we will all take that, we’ll all take the responsibility.”

Why it Matters

The Canadiens’ decision to change goaltending coaches reflects a critical moment in their season as they strive to improve performance and secure a playoff position. With a new voice in the coaching staff, fans and players alike will be eager to see if Marciano can turn around the fortunes of the goaltending unit. This shift not only highlights the challenges faced by the team but also underscores the importance of adaptability and development in professional sports. As the season progresses, the impact of this decision will be closely monitored, with the potential to shape the future trajectory of the team.
