In a bid to revitalise their goaltending situation amid a challenging season, the Montreal Canadiens have decided to part ways with goaltending coach Eric Raymond. This announcement, made by Jeff Gorton, the club’s President of Hockey Operations, signals a strategic shift as the team grapples with underwhelming performances in net.

Coaching Change Announced

Raymond, who joined the Canadiens’ coaching staff in the 2021-22 season, was relieved of his duties following a series of disappointing results. Marco Marciano, formerly the goaltending coach for the American Hockey League’s Laval Rocket, has been appointed as the interim replacement. Gorton acknowledged the difficult nature of such decisions but stressed that the change is not solely a reflection on Raymond’s abilities.

“This is an unfortunate part of the business. Eric’s done a lot of good things for us. We’ve had some success with the goalies under Eric, so this is not a one-person reflection,” Gorton stated. “This is just an organisational decision that we made to have a new voice and move forward like that.”

The Canadiens are hoping that Marciano’s familiarity with the team’s goaltenders will lead to improved performance on the ice.

Current Goaltending Struggles

The Canadiens’ goaltending has been a significant concern this season, with incumbent Sam Montembeault struggling notably. After a promising previous season that saw him post a .902 save percentage and a 2.80 goals-against average, Montembeault’s current stats tell a different story. He is currently sitting with an .868 save percentage and a 3.46 GAA.

“Marco’s an intelligent guy. Works hard. He’s got a good rapport with his goalies,” Gorton remarked about Marciano. “Everybody that we know speaks highly of him. We’ve had interest from around the league for Marco, so we’ve sort of held him back. We just felt like this was his time.”

Rookie Jakub Dobes also faces challenges, with his save percentage dropping to .890 and a GAA of 2.96 after initially being named the NHL’s third star of the month in October.

A New Direction for Development

The Canadiens have also made adjustments to their roster management, recalling 21-year-old Jacob Fowler from the Laval Rocket earlier than anticipated. Fowler had a respectable start to his NHL career, posting a .902 save percentage and a 2.62 GAA across 10 games before being returned to Laval on January 16 to streamline the goaltending situation.

“With Fowler, every decision we make with him is [to] develop in the right way,” Gorton explained. “We spend a lot of time thinking about what’s next for him and getting him enough starts, getting him enough practices.”

Despite their struggles in net, the Canadiens remain competitive, currently holding the first wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference with a record of 29-17-7. However, they sit at 25th in the league for team save percentage, which is currently at .879.

Confidence in the Future

Gorton expressed confidence in the Canadiens’ goaltending moving forward, emphasizing that the challenges faced are not solely the responsibility of the goalies.

“We believe in our goalies and we’re very comfortable,” he stated. “The easiest thing to do is blame the goalies for this. It’s not just the goalies; any time something like this happens, it’s on all of us. We will all take that, we’ll all take the responsibility.”

Why it Matters

The Canadiens’ decision to reorganise their goaltending coaching staff reflects a critical moment in the franchise’s season. With playoffs on the horizon, the hope is that the new leadership in the goaltending department will foster a turnaround in performance. This shift not only affects the immediate future of the team but also impacts player development and the overall trajectory of the franchise. As Montreal seeks to solidify its position in the playoffs, the success of this coaching change will be closely monitored by fans and analysts alike.
