Carolyn Piro, a therapist specialising in post-traumatic stress disorder, had embarked on the seven-day cruise to celebrate her 60th birthday with her family. However, their holiday took a dark turn on the fourth day when Curran, who is autistic, encountered a teenage girl who asked him to order a Long Island iced tea—a drink he mistakenly believed to be a simple iced tea.
Piro recounted that Curran, unaware of the drink’s alcoholic content, engaged in playful behaviour with the girl, reminiscent of a scene from the animated film “Shrek”. She emphasised that her son did not act inappropriately, stating, “Sean didn’t do anything wrong. He really didn’t.”

Thankfully, a local taxi driver assisted them, helping them reach their hotel.
Despite later learning that there was a disability advocate onboard, Piro was dismayed that this resource was not utilised during the crisis. She has since filed for reimbursement from Celebrity Cruises, which includes costs related to the trip and her lost wages after taking time off work to process the traumatic experience. However, she has yet to receive a response.
