In a remarkable feat, the vampire horror film Sinner has shattered the Oscars record, earning an astounding 16 nominations – the most for a single film. This unprecedented success has upended the conventional wisdom that horror movies struggle to gain recognition from the Academy.

Sinner’s star-studded cast, including Michael B. Jordan, Wunmi Mosaku, and Delroy Lindo, have all earned individual nominations, showcasing the film’s depth and versatility. Director Ryan Coogler has also been recognised for his work on the project, which blends elements of revenge thriller, musical, and social commentary.

“It’s more than just a horror,” says BBC Radio 1 film critic Ali Plumb. “Although obviously vampires are involved, there’s so much more to it.” The film’s exploration of race issues, the power of music, and the battle between good and evil have resonated with audiences and critics alike.

Sinner’s success has overshadowed another Oscar contender, One Battle After Another, which has secured 13 nominations. Leonardo DiCaprio’s portrayal of a revolutionary fighting an authoritarian regime has earned him a best actor nod, but the film could still face stiff competition from Sinner for the coveted best picture award.

In the best actor category, Sinner’s Michael B. Jordan will face off against Timothée Chalamet, who is hotly tipped to win his first Oscar for his role in the table tennis drama Marty Supreme. Meanwhile, Jessie Buckley is the frontrunner for best actress for her performance in Hamnet.

The Oscars ceremony, set to take place on 15 March, promises to be a night of high drama and unexpected twists, as the industry celebrates the remarkable achievements of Sinner and the diverse array of talent recognised across the board.
