As the Trump administration intensifies its pro-fossil fuel stance, climate activists are raising urgent concerns over what they perceive as a troubling silence from key stakeholders. Critics argue that billionaires, Democratic lawmakers, and even environmental groups are failing to mount a robust defence against the rollback of climate protections, leaving the future of American environmental policy hanging in the balance.
A Worrying Silence
In a striking commentary at the World Prosperity Forum in Zurich last month, climate denier Marc Morano expressed his astonishment at the lack of resistance to President Trump’s aggressive environmental agenda. “Billionaires are silent. Democrats in Congress have been silent. Climate activists. There has been no pushback on this,” Morano stated, reflecting a sentiment echoed by several experts in the climate science community.
The Trump administration has wasted no time in dismantling pivotal climate regulations. In December, it shuttered the National Center for Atmospheric Research, a cornerstone of climate research in the United States. Robert Brulle, a professor of environment and society at Brown University, lamented the absence of public outcry, stating, “And nothing happened. There wasn’t even a whimper. I never thought I’d ever say this: Marc Morano is correct.”
The Endangerment Finding Repeal
The recent repeal of the 2009 “endangerment finding,” which recognised that greenhouse gas emissions pose a risk to public health, marks a significant blow to climate policy. This decision not only undermines the federal government’s capacity to regulate emissions from vehicles and power plants but also aligns with the long-standing aims of climate sceptics.

Since his inauguration in January 2025, Trump has systematically undercut the nation’s climate initiatives. Reports dismissing established climate science have proliferated, while funding for renewable energy projects has been slashed. Under the leadership of Chris Wright at the Department of Energy, the agency has effectively banned the use of terms such as “climate change” and “sustainability” within its renewable energy department.
A Retreat from Climate Advocacy
In response to this onslaught, many Democratic representatives have retreated from vocalising their commitment to climate action. A palpable shift in messaging has occurred, with discussions now prioritising affordability over environmental stewardship. This change in strategy comes despite polling indicating that a significant 63% of Americans believe the government should prioritise clean energy initiatives.
Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse has implored his colleagues to resist this trend, urging, “Anyone who cares about what fossil fuel pollution is doing to Earth’s natural systems needs to ignore these so-called ‘climate hushers.’” Climate communications expert Genevieve Guenther echoed this sentiment, asserting that the Democratic Party’s silence on climate issues is a strategic misstep that benefits the Trump administration.
Corporate Compliance and Media Silence
The retreat extends into the corporate realm, with tech giants like Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates notably softening their once-strong stances on climate action. Gates, who has championed climate initiatives through his philanthropic efforts, recently proposed that resources should be redirected from climate funding to direct humanitarian aid, framing climate change as less of an existential threat than previously suggested.

Media coverage has also waned, with fewer aggressive reports critiquing the Trump administration’s fossil fuel policies. Morano highlighted this shift, noting that climate sceptics face little to no resistance from journalists, a stark contrast to the scrutiny faced during previous administrations.
Why it Matters
This trend of silence surrounding climate action poses serious risks not only to environmental policy but to the broader fight against climate change. With the overwhelming majority of the global population supporting climate action, the current political and corporate reticence is alarming. As the world grapples with increasing climate crises, the need for a united front in advocacy and action has never been more critical. The ongoing quietude could pave the way for further erosion of vital environmental protections, ultimately jeopardising the planet’s future and the wellbeing of its inhabitants.
