In a shocking incident, two trains collided on Sunday evening near the city of Málaga in southern Spain, leaving several passengers injured and shaken. Eyewitness accounts paint a distressing picture of the chaotic aftermath.
The collision occurred around 8 pm local time as the trains were travelling between the cities of Málaga and Madrid. According to local authorities, one of the trains had stopped on the tracks when the other train, travelling in the same direction, crashed into it from behind.
“It was absolutely terrifying,” said passenger Elena Fernández, 32, who was on board one of the trains. “There was a huge bang and the carriage started shaking violently. I thought we were going to derail.”
Another passenger, 45-year-old Carlos Jiménez, recounted the scene of panic that unfolded. “People were screaming and crying, rushing to get off the train. There was debris and broken glass everywhere,” he said. “It was total chaos.”
Emergency services rushed to the site, and at least 155 passengers were evacuated from the trains. Local health authorities reported that 21 people sustained minor injuries and were treated at nearby hospitals, with most released shortly after.
“We’re extremely grateful that the injuries were not more severe,” said a spokesperson for Renfe, Spain’s state-owned railway operator. “The safety of our passengers is our top priority, and we are conducting a full investigation to determine the cause of this incident.”
While the exact cause of the collision is still under investigation, preliminary reports suggest that a signalling failure may have played a role. Renfe has pledged to work closely with authorities to ensure a thorough and transparent inquiry.
“It was a terrifying experience, but I’m just relieved that everyone is safe,” said Ms. Fernández. “I’ll definitely be a bit more nervous about taking the train after this, but I know Renfe will do everything they can to prevent something like this from happening again.”
